Montreal, Canada - Jewish Community to Beef Up Security
Montreal, Canada - The city’s Jewish community is mobilizing, to ramp up security measures in a “very substantial” way following the firebombing of a Hasidic boys’ school over the weekend.
The Quebec region president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, however, refused to provide details about the measures to be taken. “If you discuss what security measures you’ve taken, then you negate what you’ve put into place,” Jeffrey Boro said.
As for the fresh money required, “I won’t quantify it except to say that it will be very substantial.”
The Hasidic boys’ school that was bombed over the weekend was one of the institutions singled out to be at risk in the aftermath of a 2004 firebombing.
It received a large subsidy from a community group to install several surveillance cameras. The cameras paid off in part last weekend when they captured images of a man in his 20s throwing a Molotov cocktail through a window, only 20 minutes after at least 12 young Hasidim had left the building.
