Jerusalem, Israel - Ultra-Orthodox Jews Attack the Unzealous
Jerusalem, Israel - There is fear in the neighborhoods of Mea She’arim and Geula. Neighborhood residents walk rapidly to their destination, seeking a safe haven from a group of violent extremists that is terrorizing the haredim, from important rabbis to ordinary people, they consider too lax.
Ordinary people and even prominent rabbis have been physically assaulted in the neighborhoods where the ultra-Orthodox live.
Yisrael Klatzkin, a printer who was ambushed and beaten on his way to a Torah class, nicknamed the group Sicarii, identifying them with the Zealots, extremists who opposed Roman rule.
The Sicarii, who may number as few, do not accept the Jewish state and refuse to carry Israeli identity cards, pay taxes, receive any government services or vote.
Rabbis have been assaulted or had stones thrown at them for ruling that Orthodox Jews could join the Israeli Defense Force or other decisions objectionable to the group.
One rabbi had to use a bodyguard so he could attend a family wedding safely.
