Morris Plains, NJ - Man Arrested and Charged in Nursing Home Bias Crime

Morris Plains, NJ - A Morris Plains man was arrested for bias and anti-Semitic remarks to a Jewish man at a nursing home.

Harry Orchard, 57, of Morris Plains, was charged with bias intimidation, an indictable offense, as well as the disorderly persons charges of harassment and defiant trespass.

Orchard had been asked to leave the King James Center on Southern Boulevard several times by staff, but refused to leave, instead Orchard harassed the administrator of the nursing home, a Jewish man who was wearing a yarmulke, and told the man, "It's too bad that Hitler didn't finish the job."

Orchard remained in Morris County Jail on $5,000 bail. He could be released on that bail only on the condition that he undergoes a psychiatric evaluation and is prohibited from returning to the nursing home.

Since when is hate a psychiatric problem? What he said was hateful and harmful and he should be punished. This should not be treated as a psychiatric illness unless the man does have a legitimate psychiatric illness such as schizophrenia or dementia which did not allow him to control what he was saying or thinking. Otherwise, any attempt to claim insanity for such racist remarks is offensive.
Just like when Rabbi Zimmerman of Lakewood restrained the black boy and the rabbi's fellow orthodox jews made racist remarks to the black boy. Perhaps Rabbi Zimmerman's friends should be put in a freezer LIVE, or give them first hand experience of watching videos day and night of the torture of slavery.
Hate is hate. It works both ways. Any racist comments to anyone is not acceptable and should be punished.
Anger related crimes are now incorporating the use of anger management courses in conjunction with punishment I think we need to educate people who commit hate related offenses and crimes as well. Maybe culteral sensitivity courses or some kind of ethnic tolerance course coupled with anger management might work. It's not a cure, but a possible beginning so that we may repair the hatred that exists today. People who say and think racist things are usually ignorant not insane.
