A couple and three children returning to Staten Island from a Thanksgiving weekend hunting trip escaped unharmed yesterday from a fire that erupted in their pickup truck and forced police to shut the Bayonne Bridge.

"The transmission was going and we saw the smoke and the flames ... so we just flew," said Patricia Perez, 42, of Brooklyn. "We were all freaked out pretty much. The whole back of the truck was packed" with luggage, including hunting gear, firearms and ammunition.

There were no injuries in the fire, which took place mid-way across the span.

Traffic was backed up on both sides of the bridge.

It was completely closed for an hour after the 1:45 p.m. blaze, which required more than 60 firefighters from New York and New Jersey. The bridge was re-opened in phases, with the entire span open shortly before 5 p.m., said the Port Authority Police Department

PA Police spokesman Marc Lavorgna said there were 60 rounds of ammunition in the pickup, but authorities had no reason to question the driver's possession of the bullets.

The fire is under investigation by the Port Authority Police Department, however.

The victims were returning from a weekend in Walton, N.Y., when the 2005 GMC pickup caught fire on the passenger's side.

"That's why you say thanks God, right?" Ms. Perez told her boyfriend's two children and niece, who stood with her afterward at the foot of the bridge.

Tom Davis, 43, of Huguenot stayed on the bridge to await assistance while a driver passing by took Ms. Perez and the kids, ages 9, 11 and 13, to the end of the span.

Ms. Perez tried to reassure the children, since most of their belongings from the weekend -- including newly purchased Christmas presents -- were destroyed.
