A Spring Valley taxi overturned on the New York State Thruway yesterday, injuring the four people inside, state police said.
The driver, Farntz Andre, 58, of Spring Valley was driving in the right southbound lane just north of the Palisades Interstate Parkway about 11:30 a.m., when Lily Wyap, 42, of Warren, N.Y., attempted to move into the right lane from the center lane, State Trooper Timothy Sammon said.
Wyap hit the taxi, and it spun off the road and overturned, he said.
Traffic was snarled, though it was not rush-hour volume.
Andre was driving a Spring Valley family, Pearl Weinberger, 46, Margolo Weinberger, 22, and Shifia Weinberger, 18.
Andre and one passenger were able to crawl out of the cab before help arrived, Nanuet Fire Department Second Assistant Chief Mike Mattera said.
The two others were lying inside, on the taxi's ceiling.
"It didn't look like they had been wearing seat belts in the back of the cab," Mattera said.
Firefighters were able to guide the two passengers out through the rear passenger door.
All four suffered minor injuries and were taken to Nyack Hospital by the Nanuet Community Ambulance Corps, Sammon said.
Wyap was not injured.
The right lane was closed for about 45 minutes, tying up traffic, Mattera said.
"The Thruway was backed up for miles in both directions," he said.
Philip DeLorenzo said he took the Thruway yesterday to get to the Bronx and was lucky to leave early enough to avoid the incident.
"I beat that one," the Valley Cottage man said with a laugh. "I left my house at 6:30. It was a beautiful run."
DeLorenzo said sitting in traffic because of a car accident was a commuter's nightmare.
"You have to count to 10 an awful lot," he said. "There's nothing you can do about it. You can't get nutty about it. You have to live with it."
Last year, 3,072 people were injured and 44 killed on the 641-mile Thruway, according to the New York State Thruway Authority.
2005 statistics were not available.
