LONDON (AP) _ British police seized hundreds of firearms, including automatic weapons and shotguns, in a dawn raid near London on Wednesday targeting gun-smuggling from the United States to London criminals.

The Metropolitan Police said the raids, which were not terrorist-related, were carried out as part of Operation Trident, which combats gun crime in the black community.

Officers raided two homes and a business in Dartford, southeast of London, and arrested a 55-year-old man, police said. Hundreds of guns, including shotguns, semiautomatic guns and automatic weapons, were found at one house.

The force said an operation linked to the British seizure was under way in New Jersey. Scotland Yard would not say where in the Garden State.

Richard Marianos, a spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, said no raids were carried out in New Jersey, and no one was taken into custody in the Garden State.

"For the past eight months, we've been working with British authorities on an investigation into international weapons trafficking," he said. "We were asked to conduct some followup investigative work supporting the search warrants" in England.

"This is an ongoing case, and we're still working it," he said.

In London, Det. Chief Superintendent Kevin Davis said, "This is the biggest firearms haul we have ever had. Guns are mounted on every available wall space in the property and live ammunition was found lying on the floor."

Davis said it would take at least three days to remove all the evidence from the semi-detached suburban house, which had a large U.S. flag hanging over the front porch.

The raids followed a series of gangland shootings in London last year.

Davis said the operation "has resulted in hundreds of guns being taken out of circulation and has potentially prevented a number of serious injuries or even deaths occurring on the streets of London."
