New York, NY - Oil Executive Donates $100 million to Yeshiva University

New York, NY - The Yeshiva University got its largest gift in the school's 120-year history, $100 million from an oil executive to further undergraduate Jewish education, the university announced.

The donation of Ronald P. Stanton, chairman of petrochemical and fertilizer fuel company Transammonia Inc., will create a fund overseen by university president Richard M. Joel to recruit top faculty, renovate and acquire university facilities and support research and scholarship.
"We are extremely grateful to Ron for his historic beneficence, as well as his steadfast confidence in Yeshiva University's mission," Joel said.
The contribution will ensure the 7,200-student school remains a top-tier American research university, he said.

The university has three undergraduate schools, including a women's college and business school, and graduate programs including Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.

What a shame. A person has an opportunity to donate money to a yeshiva or Makom Torah, and just throws it away.

    Nebach

Tizku L'Mitzvos! I hope we will see more of people like that... if he could do such a large amount I am sure we can do at least something for our local Yeshives.

    What would you suggest?

He gives it to Satmer so they can throw it all at attorney fees?

more true learning is done in YU then most yeshivas in the world.....and this is coming from a BP resident

Since When is "BP" a proof of anything?

Besides, the article doesn't mention anywhere that the money is intended for the Limud Torah part of YU. It suggests the money will be used for Research & other secular studies. I doubt very strongly that the donor has any intention for it to go for Limud Hatorah.

if not for secular studies you wouldnt have a computer or internet to write on, a car to drive, or doctors and lawyers to help you out in trouble.
Why cant you let people do what they want to. Who says you;re position is always right. There seems to be an arrogance from the ultra orthodox that they are better than the rest of judaism.
What ever happened to the 70 faces of torah.
Why cant we all just get along then moshiach would have come.
If you dont want to go to YU, then dont, they arent asking you for money. If you dont like Chabad you don't either. But why cant we just get along. Sometimes I'm embarrased that I live in a community that is so narrow minded and not focused on what yiddishkeit is really about.

Anon at 10:51- No where in the article does it say that it will further secular studies as you incorrectly suggest. On the contrary, in the first paragraph of this article it says "to further undergraduate Jewish education." To me "jewish education" is Limud Hatorah not secular studies. Before you comment anything, check your facts so as not to inaccurately paraphrase an article.

    Is this doner jewish?

From the original Post, "The contribution will ensure the 7,200-student school remains a top-tier American research university, he said".....hmmmmm, does that mean Limud Hatorah to you??????????????

First of all, YU's motto is Torah U'Madda. Second of all, if it develops a competitive undergraduate program in the secular departments, it has a good chance of attracting those kids who may have gone to secular universities.

to the person who wrote the first blog; you had the opportunity to spend that time learning but chose instead to bash YU.WHY are you busy with this loshon hora. You took precious time & "threw it away"; NEBACH

in response to the last blogger,

Where did I Chas V'sholom "Bash" YU? All I said was that the person who donated the money had an opportunity to send the money for a much greater cause than what he chose - secular studies. Let him even have given it to YU, just for Limudei Kodesh.
