Manhattan, NY - Famous Kosher Bakery Being Desplaced
Manhattan, NY - The widely known Gertel's Bakery, the last renowned kosher bakery on the Lower East Side, is about to being displaced and make way for condominiums on that place.
Located at 53 Hester Street, Gertel's has been in business since 1914. Although an e-newsletter from the Lower East Side Tenement Museum warns that Gertel's will be closing next year, a call to the shop elicited a clarification: "We're just moving," but no new location yet.

Their rugelach rock! I remember when Guss pickles was right across the street in REAL wooden barrels, not like the sterile plastic ones today. Condos over their? It is a narrow smelly block. Well, people need to live in any luch.

I used to sometimes walk over to the LES on Fridays to buy challahs for Shabbos at Gertel's when I worked nearby in Lower Manhattan back in the 80s. Sorry to see it go.

To 3:00. Gus moved around the corner going north about 1/2 block on Essex. It is under another name like Mr. Pickle. Sterile plastic barrels, yuk! They aren't the same. I loved them....a tear.
