Washington, DC - FBI Alerting The Public of an Email Scam Using the FBI Director's Name
Washington, DC - If you receive what appears to be an e-mail from FBI Director Robert Mueller saying you could be eligible for a big cash payment, it's just a scam.
The FBI has issued an alert warning consumers of an e-mail hoax using Mueller's name, and it is followed by a second e-mail threatening federal charges if the recipient doesn't respond to the first. The FBI advises recipients: "Do not respond."
The first e-mail with Mueller's name also includes official information taken from the law enforcement agency's web site about FBI Identification records and a Certificate of Ownership. The follow up e-mail with the threat claims to be from a lower-level official.
It demands a fee be sent to "FBI Nigeria" which will issue the certificate.
It's the second scam in two months to pose as coming from Mueller.
