Monsey, NY - Authorities Responded to Calls of Kaparos (Chickens) Being Mistreated
Monsey, NY - Reports that numerous chickens were being mistreated or killed at a park-and-ride lot in Monsey today proved to be inaccurate.
When authorities got to the county lot on Route 59, they found about 4,000 chickens under a large tent, apparently gathered there by the Orthodox Jewish community for a particular holiday ritual, said Ramapo Police Department Capt. James Quinn.
Also did the Monsey Fire Department respond to ensure the chickens had adequate water, and the county Health Department responded to ensure the birds were being properly cared for, Quinn said. He said police were initially called by concerned witnesses who saw some of the birds get loose.
The kaparos ritual, which is traditionally performed during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, involves waving a chicken over one's head while saying a prayer. The chicken is then sent to slaughter and given to the poor.

It's strange - here in Flatbush where the malodorous smells usually waft on over from Coney Island Ave in the vicinity of the Esrogim outlets at this time of the year, the air smells kinda clean. I wonder if it has to do with Health Dept. issues; anyhow, you can walk out of your house without keeling over. It's dollar Kaporos for me!

AT LEAST THESE WERE TO BE KOSHER CHICKENS IN MONSEY, HOPEFULLY TO BE SALTED WITH PLAIN OLD HIGH SODIUM SALT.

Maybe the lack of kaporos chickens in Flatbush is because they were sent to Monsey to relieve the community's kosher chicken shortage?

Who called police???
This is called "Mesirah"!!!
Usually, and as it turned out to be in this case, People try to "maser" even if there is no wrong-doing!
Wow! Is there a gehenim waiting for them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Just wondering if the guy that was so concerned tried to talk to the management before he called the authorities??)

10:25 - why do you assume it was a jew who called the authorities? The park n ride in question is in a decidedly non-jewish part of town. It could've been anyone.
Don't be so quick to be "mekatraig" on your brothers and sisters, especially in the yemei din.

park n ride IS a very jewish section!
I doubt that the chikies were seen from non-jewish passer-by's.
In order to report trouble there, you actually have to LOOK for it!
Well, maybe a 'goy' decided to investigate? Um, maybe...
I would at least WISH so!
You are right though, why be 'mekatraig' - let's just leave it that a 'goy' was the trouble maker!

The Park & Ride is on Route 59 which is the main road in Rockland County. There are alot of "animal lovers" around. A number of years back there was a demonstration of animal rights people by kaporos. I doubt that the call to the police was made by afrum yid.

I shlugged kapporos in Monsey. The chickens were released from the crates,as they were delivered, and set free in a huge coop under a tent. The section for the geshluggene kapporos was also a large pen with ample amounts of water for the birds. There was absolutely NO tzaar baalei chayim at all.
It was all done in a very organized way, and was Mamash a kiddush Hashem!
Gmar Chasima Tova to you all.

10:12 - your chickens were set free. Were they to be used again and again for kappores or were they to be schected there. Reusing chickens again and again seems be be a real money maker, wich each chicken possibly earning upwards of $100 daily. That's not chicken feed!

Anonymous who said "What an experience to shlog Perdue chickens" YOU ARE MISTAKEN - THAT COULD NOT HAVE BEEN A PERDUE CHICKEN YOU USED. THERE ARE NO LIVE PERDUE CHICKENS, ONLY DEAD ONES AND THEY ARE EASILY IDENTIFIABLE BY THE PERDUE WING TAG.

In Monsey this year, they only use Perdue for Kapparos. "For tough sins, it takes a tender chicken."

This is in response to 10:37 am. As I wrote, it was extremely well organized. The pen for the geshluggeneh kapparos was separate from the pen that held the fresh chickens. They were not used over and over again. The people who arranged this all deserve to get compensated for it, and the chickens end up being served in a yeshiva.
Gut Yahr.
