New York - Governor To Make Decision on Removal of State Comptroller by Friday
New York - Governor George Pataki said he will make a decision on whether to seek the removal of Comptroller Alan Hevesi by Friday and he's already interviewing potential prosecutors.
Pataki is seeking thousands of records related to the state Ethics Commission finding Monday that the one-term Democratic comptroller broke the law when he failed to repay the state for using a staffer to chauffeur his wife.
Hevesi, seeking re-election in two weeks, acknowledged the arrangement after it was made public by his Republican opponent in September, issued an apology, and paid $83,000 that he calculated was owed to the state. He faces a criminal investigation by the Albany County district attorney and Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office is reviewing whether he fully compensated the state.
