With the 2nd building collapse in Brooklyn this month, and with last week's dirtslide we wonder about the Building Departments abilities to be on top of construction of buildings and structural safety around this booming City.

Williamsburg Brooklyn, Engineers Investigate Cause of Building Collapse

The owner of the building received a permit in March to raise the roof of the three story apartment building but got a violation for not having an approved set of plans at the site.

The city has ordered the building be demolished to ground level. That work began last night.

EMS reporting they have 10 patients, PD calling in K9 units to search for people trapped.

Taxes in Kiryas Yoel, MonDroe stable; no hike for 8th straight year

The village of Kiryas Yoel is raising its tax levy the total amount it collects from property owners to support its spending. That figure will go up by 7.7 percent to roughly $1.4 million in the fiscal year beginning on June 1.But the tax base has widened at a comparable rate over the last year, largely because of the relentless housing construction. That means the tax rate will remain at an unusually low $14.14 per $1,000 of assessed value.
But what about all the big capital projects completed or started since the last tax hike. The simplest explanation appears to be government grants, which have helped pay for several of the capital projects, and municipal bonds.

They have applied to the state Department of Environmental Conservation to operate the well in MonDroe capable of producing 450 gallons per minute. By contrast, the most powerful wells in Kiryas Yoel's arsenal can pump no more than 220 gallons per minute.
The state DEC is soliciting written comments on the proposal through June 3. The agency will determine how many hours a day Kiryas Yoel could pump the well if and when it issues a permit. If approved, the well could be on line within two months.

They are spending about $100 million putting up more than 400 apartments in the old brick building, and they are looking to buy Schwartz Chemical building next door.
