New Square House Vandalized

New Square -- Police are conducting a criminal investigation into the vandalism at 9 Eisenhower Ave. which has been the scene of demonstrations by some residents and vandalism since the new owner evicted three families and two businesses in June.

Part of a house that a California-based real estate investor bought recently at a foreclosure was purposely knocked down this week, leaving a pile.

"We have ruled out an accidental collapse, we can comfortably say this house probably wasn't randomly chosen. There have been ongoing problems there."
The damage was estimated at $25,000 and New Square has given the owner a few days to clean up the rubble. If he doesn't, the village intends to hire a contractor and bill the owner.
"I am very upset at this hooliganism," the owner said. "No one has the right to destroy another person's property. This is despicable and uncivilized."
He said he would file a civil rights complaint with the FBI and the state Attorney General's Office, and would rebuild the three-family house, clean up the grounds and rent to people who were not Chasidic Jews and didn't live in the community.
Residents said they knew nothing about how the side of the building came down, but seemed aware of the controversy surrounding the house. They declined to give their names.

The Catskill Peddler

ULSTER HEIGHTS, N.Y., -- The kosher sock guy is here, the kosher sock guy is here," the children shouted, at the arrival of Murray Goldwag and his black knee-highs, Despite the words on his apron - "Murray's Kosher Socks" - Mr. Goldwag is not just a purveyor of hosiery, nearly everything that can be for $3 or less.
Like Izzy the Knishman, Sy the Shoe Guy and the parade of men and women who deal in manicures, religious books and kosher ice cream, Mr. Goldwag travels between the 200 or so Catskill bungalow colonies that enliven the mountains here like so many Polish shtetls, Lower East Side pushcart culture transferred to the country.
He and his shlepping brethren deal in dry goods, helping to relieve the ennui of a long summer day while providing refreshments or a desperately needed replacement for the skullcap that ended up at the bottom of the lake.
At the Satmar-dominated camps, where women do not drive, the traveling salesmen are cherished even more.
"When you have eight children who are constantly losing their socks, you look forward to Murray's arrival," said someone who was stocking up on hosiery for six boys.

NYPD Cop With Controversial Tattoo

An NYPD Police Academy recruit of Middle Eastern heritage has a bold
tattoo spelling out the word "JIHAD" on his forearm, with a large sword drawn
beneath it - and there's nothing the department can do about it.

The extraordinary markings caused a stir around the academy as soon as the
6-foot tall probationary cop rolled up his sleeves and revealed the tattoo.

The controversy prompted police brass to interview the officer, who said that
"JIHAD" is his nickname and made it clear that he had no affinity for any
terror causes.

The NYPD, which has regulations for the length of an officer's hair, has no
prohibitions against tattoos.

Pinchas came to the Berlin Zoo from Warsaw Zoo and when they started to feed him prawns and swordfish, he didn't take any interest, then someone at Warsaw mentioned that Pinchas was special and was always picky with his food, so they had some salmon and gave it to him which he enjoyed.
One day a Jewish couple from Florida came to the zoo and were eating a smoked salmon bagel and Pinchas was hovering around them while the other penguins were in another part of the penguin area. One of the staff noticed this and after some tests, discovered that Pinchas was drawn towards the smoked salmon.

In Williamsburg Immigrant Woman Line Up for Day Labor

Day-Labor Williamsburg Above BQE 08/15/05

In Williamsburg, commuters on the busy Brooklyn-Queens Expressway are oblivious to the scene unfolding on an overpass above them of immigrant woman line up for day labor. The work at stake is $8-an-hour housecleaning, and those vying for a day's scrubbing, mainly for Chasidic homemakers, stand in a crude ascending hierarchy of employer preference: Mexican and Central American women in their 30's at the back, Polish immigrant women in their 50's and 60's in the middle, and young Polish students with a command of English at the head of the line.

Kiryas Yoel MonDroe Cemetery Battle Becomes Legal Affair

Kiryas Yoel MonDroe -- A long-simmering dispute over which faction controls the cemetery where the revered founder of the Satmar Chasidic movement is buried has finally boiled over into court.
One side from Kiryas Yoel recently filed a lawsuit claiming its rivals in Brooklyn are improperly trying to assert control over the burial ground.
They insist the sacred ground belongs jointly to the main Satmar congregations in Kiryas Yoel and Brooklyn, and they believe, that their side controls the Brooklyn congregation.

Part of the lawsuit deals with issues connected to the rebbe's anniversary, including the selection of organizations that can collect donations at the cemetery during the event. Police say they expect nothing worse at this year's anniversary, which falls on Aug. 31.

But the larger, year-round issues raised by the case are over which side decides who may be buried in the cemetery. The spark for the cemetery lawsuit appears to have been a letter from one defendant on June 30 declaring that the other side can no longer bury its family members in Kiryas Yoel "without written permission from our Congregation."
The letter also declared that anyone who wants to set up a fundraising booth during the upcoming anniversary of the rebbe's death would need the congregation's permission.
