Kosher Pizza in the Catskills, Saturday Night

KIAMESHA LAKE, NY, -- For young observant Jews in the Catskills, Saturday nights revolve around eating and late-night shopping.

At the region's growing number of yeshivas, young Hasidic men spend the week deep in Talmudic study. At the sleepaway camps, counselors are kept busy with their young charges. And from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, the Jewish Shabbas keeps everyone tethered to their homes. By Saturday night, everyone is yearning for diversion, as Isaac Waldman, 19, said "This is the life," standing leaning heavily on a friend's shoulder. "We'll never have this much fun again."

One Nation, Under God

The New York City Board of Education announced last week that it will require the pledge at the beginning of every school day (though conscientious objectors will not be disciplined).
Rabbi Mordechai Besser, principal of Manhattan Day School, said. Last week, we just sent out a memo that all classes should say the pledge on a daily basis.

At several day schools where the pledge isnt said, administrators said that it was increasingly being asked about by parents.

But Rabbi Hertz Frankel, principal of secular studies at the Beis Rochel girls schools of Satmar, said his schools dont say the pledge and it hasnt come up. We do say Ani Mamin every day, says Rabbi Frankel, referring to the affirmation of faith that God will send a Redeemer in the End of Days. Thats a pledge, too.

The Pledge of Allegiance, though, has long been instituted at the other all-Satmar public school in upstate Kiryas Yoel, MonDroe. One yeshiva principal, who asked not to be named, was pleased that the pledge is returning God to the public schools, even without school prayer, through the verse: One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Two Company's To Sell ‘Kosher’ Cellphones

Two of Cell company's have revealed that they will begin marketing ‘kosher’ cellphones to the ultra-orthodox Jewish Charedi community. Cellcom and Pelephone say the phones will be voice-capable only and will not be able to send or receive SMS nor access the internet. The launch comes after leaders voiced concerns that wireless content constituted a threat to the sanctity of their community.

The two companies have obtained certification from a special committee of rabbis to distribute the “kosher” cellphones to the ultra-orthodox community. Until now, only MIRS Communications Ltd. had this kind of certification, but it subsequently had problems with the committee of rabbis, who claimed that the barriers in MIRS’ handsets to block content could be breached.

Catskill Casinos: The Sudden Lack Of Progress Is A Bitter Blow.

For opponents of gambling in the Catskills, the derailing of the quest for casinos - at least for now - was a lucky break. But for many who view gambling as the last, best chance to restore this once-thriving resort region to prosperity, the sudden lack of progress was a bitter blow.
The impasse has meant frustration for the town officials who have been waiting for a huge new source of revenue, as well as real estate developers who have already bought large tracts of land and the Indian tribe members who want a piece of the action.

The prospect of casinos in the Catskills is certainly not dead. Legislators from both parties have said that they could take up the issue again.

Some accused the Senate majority leader, Joseph L. Bruno, of refusing to allow only one casino because his son, Kenneth, was a consultant for the Wisconsin Oneidas, one of the two tribes that were cut from the Assembly's and governor's proposal.

What's So Shocking About Using A Crane For High Construction?

That's what Mandy Brach one of the building's owners of the new project in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, wants to know.

It's about a giant crane parked on North Seventh Street and Bedford Avenue. The crane is one of the tallest things in the neighborhood, it had lately drawn attention to the building that will rise in its place, a mixed-use structure, 14 stories and about 200 feet tall, which opponents say will stick out drastically and insultingly in a generally low-rise neighborhood.

"It's just blowing people away," a spokesman for a neighborhood advocacy group said, "We had been warning people for quite a while about this building, and it didn't really sink in until they saw the crane."

But Mr. Brach, said that work will continue.
"This is over," Mr. Brach said, contending that previous efforts to negotiate with the opponents had gone nowhere. "Everybody reviewed it; everybody went over it," he added, describing the planned structure as "the nicest building in Brooklyn."

Williamsburg Environmentalist Rabbi Fighting Moisture Cured

In Jewish Williamsburg moisture cured has become part of the culture, and a Rabbi a Williamsburg native, is convinced that moisture cure is making people sick, and he has vowed to educate his neighbors about its dangers and get the product banned. But he already acknowledges that the fight has changed him. It has turned him into an environmentalist, for one thing.
It's a story of what in the Yiddish language, is called a noodge -- a very determined man who is willing to pester, cajole and nag the world to draw attention to his cause. And while health professionals remain skeptical of some of the Rabbi claims -- particularly that moisture cure is causing cancer and miscarriages in Williamsburg -- others say he is clearly onto something in describing the respiratory effects.
