Kosher Wine For The Holidays

.
Moshe Yudkowsky an Orthodox Jew seems to be a wine connoisseur.

"The Jewish community in Europe used to drink wines like those I'm drinking today," Yudkowsky says, "but when Jews came to America, the Old World grapes weren't available."

Until 20 or 30 years ago, "everybody was drinking sweet malagas," Yudkowsky says. (These sticky, purple wines are made from American "Red Malaga" grapes. Even today, most Jews have scarcely ventured beyond those types.

Yudkowsky remembers the first time he tasted a wine that was different, in the late 1970s. "It was a Hagafen Riesling," he says, still a fairly sweet wine. That wine led to what Yudkowsky calls "a hobby that's out of control." He's been sampling and collecting kosher wines ever since.

Two years ago, he combined his worlds of technology, Judaism and wine to create the online Kosher Wine Review (www.kosherwinereview.com), a Web site detailing his rankings of strictly kosher wines. The site can sort the reviewed wines by criteria ranging from color to value, and also offers the ability to download the information to a Palm Pilot organizer.

Is Coke Kosher ?

IN the early 1930's, Rabbi Tobias Geffen of Congregation Shearith Israel in Atlanta approached Harold Hirsh, an attorney for the Coca-Cola Corporation, and told him he had to know what ingredients were in the "secret recipe" to certify the drink's kosher status. Sworn to secrecy about the recipe, Geffen in 1935 published a teshuva, or Jewish legal response, affirming Coca-Cola's kosher certification for Passover. "With the help of God," wrote Geffen, "I have been able to uncover a pragmatic solution according to which there would be no question or any doubt concerning the ingredients of Coca-Cola."

In fact, the soft-drink company did tweak a couple of ingredients in order to make the soda kosher. That year the Atlanta bottling company produced a bottle cap that included the first-ever certification in Hebrew stating that Coca-Cola was kosher and including Rabbi Geffen's name and the date. An April 3, 1936, issue of the Southern Israelite, a regional Jewish newspaper, advertised, "Coca-Cola in bottles now kosher for Passover."

Time Switch Raises Concerns For Worshippers To Choose Between Prayer And Arriving Late To Work.

A new law would end daylight-saving time on the first Sunday in November instead of the last Sunday in October. It would start three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March rather than the first Sunday in April. That extension would create some darker mornings in order to bring more daylight to the evenings and help save energy.

Normally, during the first week of November the sun would rise at about 6:55 a.m. If daylight time were extended, the sun wouldn't rise until an hour later. The sun would rise later in the spring, too – at 7:45 a.m. on March 11, 2007.

The new system worry's some in the Orthodox Jewish community's. Darkness may be a problem for Orthodox Jews, who start the day with a morning prayer intended to coincide with dawn. Congressmen questioned whether an 8 a.m. sunrise might force some worshippers to choose between prayer and arriving late to work.

Southeast, NY, -- To Forgive For The Rabbi Or Not To That Is The Question.

Southeast, NY, -- THE legal case of the Rabbi of Congregation Sons of Israel was closed on Sept. 14. The misdemeanor charges against him for possession of marijuana were dropped. For driving with ability impaired by drugs, he received a citation and paid a $400 fine. The incident is a mark on his driving record - nothing more than a traffic violation.

But the real conflict was never in the legal system; it was in the Rabbi's community that the rift among the faithful whom he has led for 13 years has widened.

In August the congregation's board voted to suspend the Rabbi 50, from the pulpit for 30 days, with pay. This week, on the eve of Rosh Hashana, the rabbi - who is married and has three adolescent children - will return to his job. How welcome that return will be remains unclear.

Those who urge forgiveness say that although the Rabbi made a grave mistake, he has repeatedly apologized for it. Those who urge punishment say that he has lost his moral and ethical authority as a religious leader, especially among impressionable children.
