A Controversial Plaque Missing At Lubavitcher headquarters In Crown Heights

A controversial plaque affixed to a wall outside the central Lubavitcher headquarters in Crown Heights was quietly stolen - despite around-the-clock security to protect it.

The plaque had been under constant guard by a private security company since the violence erupted in December, but the guard must have momentarily left his post, officials said.

"What exactly happened is still under investigation," said an official, adding that the security firm has been fired.

At issue were the words "of blessed memory" inscribed under Schneerson's name.
The faction that installed the plaque believes Schneerson is dead. Another faction believes the grand rebbe is alive - and is coming back as the Messiah - and so took offense at the plaque's wording.

There is now a large hole on the side of the synagogue where the plaque used to hang. Officials would not say yesterday whether it would be replaced this time.

Town of Woodbury Afraid That Kiryas Yoel MonDroe, Will Spread In To Their Neighborhood.

Woodbury – Critics will unload on the Town Board tonight as it begins a public hearing on several proposed zoning changes and new laws that would allow a developer to build 451 homes.
Opponents have been attacking the board for months for even considering loosening the town's zoning to let the developers of this and another project build more homes than they could under current law.
The two proposals have roiled town politics like no other recent issue, energizing efforts by activists in both political parties to unseat incumbents in November and take over the board.
The purpose of tonight's hearing is to let people sound off on a draft environmental impact statement filed last month by the Rockland County developer hoping to build 451 homes on 398 acres off Nininger Road.

The project has intersected with the continuing fear in Woodbury that multifamily housing from the neighboring Chasidic community of Kiryas Yoel MonDroe will spread into Woodbury's rural fringe as Kiryas Yoel's population keeps growing.

As opponents of his project have assailed the board, The developer has become more outspoken in saying that Chasidic developers might buy the land he's trying to develop if his project is thwarted – a pitch critics denounce as a scare tactic.

The hearing will begin at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the auditorium of Monroe-Woodbury High School on Dunderberg Road. It will resume at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the high school.

Catskill Hatzalah And Monticello Firefighters Had Their Seventh Annual Meeting.

For the past 24 years, Catskill Hatzalah has come to Sullivan County Catskills, with 11 ambulances and with 250 to 300 emergency medical technicians and EMTs. Catskill Hatzalah is affiliated with Chevrah Hatzolah of New York City, the largest volunteer ambulance service in the world. They're staffed by Orthodox Jews – by people just like the folks who flock the catskills for the summer.

This week Catskill Hatzalah and Monticello Firefighters had their seventh annual meeting, a tradition established to lay out the groundwork for cooperation.
And one of the problems they are trying to work on, (on the occasions when there has been a problem) has been with other people not Hatzalah members, that they get in the way of emergency medical workers, said Monticello's director of fire services.

"There are a lot of people who come to calls who are not Hatzalah personnel. They get in our way, and they get in your way," said a coordinator with Catskill Hatzalah. Move impostors off the scene and don't be shy about it.

The firefighters said they've been reluctant to be too forceful because they don't want to offend the Orthodox community.

So to solve the problem from now on all Hatzalah members are required to wear a bright yellow emergency vest at any scene. If a guy isn't wearing a vest, will have to tell him to go home, to leave the scene.

U/D On Our Story Of July 7th. That Roosevelt NJ Residents Are Protesting Yeshiva Plans.

Roosevelt Shuel We reported at that time that plans to bring a yeshiva to Roosevelt is drawing the community's ire. And that neighbors fear the school could change the small town's character, while the hosting synagogue is hoping the yeshiva will revive its struggling congregation.

Now Roosevelt residents and the Borough Council are grilling the Mayor alleging that the mayor, who is also on the synagogue’s board of trustees, has a personal interest in the school’s development, and some residents are calling for his resignation.
Residents packed Borough, demanding more information about the mayor’s involvement with Congregation Anshei Roosevelt and its plan to open an Orthodox day school, or yeshiva, for high school-age boys at the Roosevelt Synagogue on Homestead Lane.

The council will discuss the request for the Mayor’s resignation at the July 18 meeting.

The trooper immediately noticed the discrepancies and arrested her on two felony counts of second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument. She was arraigned and sent to Sullivan County Jail in lieu of 15 hundred dollars bail pending a later court appearance in Mamakating Town Court.

Request From Mayor M. Bloomberg; Please Not To Call Him Late At Night At Home.

Our Mayer Bloomburg

Mayor M. Bloomberg; said he'd appreciate it if you don't call him late at night. But in an emergency you could, because he works for the people, and that's part of the job.

The mayor, who has a listed home number, said he received a late-night phone call from a constituent on Monday. She was concerned about a housing issue.

The 63-year-old mayor said he didn't quite understand what the woman wanted, so he asked her to call his work number in the morning. She did and Bloomberg transferred the call to someone who could help her.

But if you can't get the 311 operator to budge? Maybe you should dial Bloomberg may be the mayor and a billionaire but he's just a phone call away - only if you call at the right hour.

U/D: July 14, 2005
The mayor's town house on the Upper East Side received "more calls than we can count" after news organizations reported that his phone number was in the book, said Mr. Bloomberg's communications director.

The woman who dialed the Bloomberg residence on Monday, Sheila Powsner, a Brooklyn schoolteacher, said that she was happy with his response.

But not everyone who has made the call seemed satisfied. Toby Cohen, who said she called the mayor's home more than once with her own housing complaint and tried to hand-deliver a letter to him there, believes Mr. Bloomberg tried to avoid her.

"A man answered the phone and insisted he was not the mayor," she said yesterday. "But I'm quite sure it was him because I recognized his voice."

Cell Phone Service Restored At Two Of Four Area Tunnels

Cell phone service, the only lifeline for drivers under the Hudson and East rivers, was restored Monday afternoon at two of the city's four tunnels after being cut over the weekend as a terror precaution, but the other two tunnels will be without service for the foreseeable future.

Cell Phone Signals blocked In The Holland, Lincoln, Midtown and Battery Tunnels.

Cell phones were used to trigger the Madrid train bombings, which killed 191 people last year, and are often used to detonate roadside bombs in Iraq. Authorities think last week's nearsimultaneous London blasts may have been sparked the same way.

That's why authorities blocked cell phone signals in the tunnels soon after the London subway bombings last week.

They did it, apparently, so terrorists couldn't use a cell signal to remotely detonate a bomb. But angry drivers said yesterday they felt less safe without a way to call for help in an emergency.

The MTA and Port Authority wouldn't say why they pulled the plug or when service would be restored. An NYPD spokesman said police never asked for a phone block.
