Monroe, NY - Is There Another Village Coming To Monroe?

Monroe, NY - The group Save Monroe asks in its upcoming issue "Isn't it time we investigate the pros and cons of a new village - one that would represent the 50 percent of Monroe's population that resides outside the Village of Kiryas Joel?"

The idea comes on the heels of overwhelming votes by residents of southern Blooming Grove and Woodbury to incorporate villages.
In both places, voters wanted to prevent the high-density housing of Kiryas Joel from spreading into their towns.
In Monroe, the idea has arisen because of Kiryas Joel's dominance in town elections, not its potential expansion.

The Hasidic community's voting blocs have kept Monroe's Republican incumbents in power in the last several elections, despite huge support for their challengers in areas outside Kiryas Joel. "Kiryas Joel has their own village, and obviously I don't vote in their elections," the leader of the group said. "They determine their own destiny. I think a large part of the population would like the same right to determine their own," she said.

The first step in creating a village would be to submit a petition signed by residents of the area that would be incorporated.
If the town supervisor determines the petition is valid, the proposal would then be put to voters in a referendum.

Lvov, Ukraine - Mass Grave Found With Jewish Remains

Lvov, Ukraine - Hundreds of Jewish skeletons were uncovered in a mass grave hidden in a forest next to the city of Lvov in Ukraine, all massacred during the Second World War. The remains were uncovered in one of the 500 sites that a delegation of investigative members are planning on excavating.

The delegation members began examining areas around Lvov located in western Ukraine.
Before the Second World War, about 110,000 Jews lived in Lvov, and with Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union in June of 1941, this city and the surrounding area was one of the first ones that were invaded.

“One of the sites that the elderly told us about was in a small village next to Lvov, where there is a forest next to a Jewish cemetery,” said one of the delegation members. “We used metal detectors to locate the exact area by detecting the bullets.” "The metal detectors went off exactly in that area. They began digging, and two meters down, the remains began to surface. Hundreds of skulls and bare skeletons were counted in the grave site. The years in which the bullets were manufactured were engraved on the bullets recovered from the remains – 1941, 1939 – as well as the country in which they were manufactured – Germany.

The delegation members estimated that in this mass grave alone some 1,800 Jews were buried. They said that after the grave was uncovered, Ukrainian authorities agreed for a religious burial ceremony to be organized with the participation of a rabbi from Lvov, to recognize the area as a Jewish burial.

Baltimore, MD - Shomrim Meets The Guardian Angels After an Increase in Violence on Shabbos

Baltimore, MD - Upper Park Heights could be under the protection of one of the nation’s most famous volunteer security groups the Guardian Angels. They are looking to bring their no-nonsense, quiet and respectful presence to Park Heights streets, according to Marcus Dent, Baltimore coordinator of the Guardian Angels.

The group was alerted by a private citizen of the rise in break-ins from last fall, and the occasional spate of personal attacks on Jewish residents, many happening during Shabbas.
They had two meetings with the community security group Shomrim in recent months, and Guardian Angels founder Mr. Sliwa himself visited the area and joined a meeting with the Shomrim at the Pikesville Hilton, Mr. Sliwa said that he had worked with Jewish communities in the past, and that he was very familiar with Shabbas and holiday rituals and practices, such as walking home at later hours from festive meals or eating outside in a sukkah.
Abraham Sacharow, a community member who was attacked and beaten by youths on a Shabbas night near Menlo Drive, said at the meeting, that one of the perps even waved a revolver in his face. "There’s no patrol on Shabbos," he said. "There needs to be some sort of feeling of security."

Blooming Grove, NY - Town Battles Illegal Kosher Market

Blooming Grove, NY - A kosher market that opened recently illegally, isn't well with the Town of Blooming Grove.
The town sought an injunction to close the Orange Kosher Market, which it says was built and opened illegally, but o decision was reached yet in state Supreme Court, and the parties will return to court next week.

The controversy began late last year, when the two-story building on Route 17M that houses the market was under construction. A stop-work order was issued Sept. 22 because Building Inspector Jeanne Ovensen said builders failed to put windows on the second floor. Construction continued despite the order.
Once the building was completed, the town didn't issue a certificate of occupancy, Bohan said. But the market opened anyway and is in full swing with produce and food products lining the shelves and customers coming in and out. "We have no problem with someone opening a business," Bohan said. "But they have to do it the right way."

Alan Lipman of Goshen, wouldn't speak about the conflict, although he did seek to explain why his clients wouldn't comment on the subject. "There is a story, but not one that can be told at this time," he said. "People of my faith have to have great patience. We wait and we wait and we wait."

California - Genes Keep Jews, Asians Off Alcohol

California - New research unveiled at the University of California suggests, that Jews, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean people in general are cheaper drunks and, as a result, have a lower risk of becoming alcoholics.
A psychiatry professor at the University of California, said 10 per cent of Japanese, Chinese and Korean people had bad genes that made them ill and nauseous after a small dose of alcohol. "How likely is it that these people develop serious problems with alcoholism? Virtually zero," the Professor said.

Forty per cent of the same Asian group had an enzyme that was unable to break down alcohol properly, causing them to flush bright red in the face. This made them more responsive to alcohol and less tolerant of it, meaning they were less likely to drink heavily and develop severe alcohol problems. Jewish people were also prone to a lower alcohol tolerance, the Professor said, and his research suggested that 60 per cent of the risk for severe alcohol problems lies in a person's genes; the other factor is a person's environment.

Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - Discount Bus Companies Tangle Over Territory

Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - The number of competitors to Greyhound Lines with inexpensive fares has soared in recent years, in fact, in the booming world of discount travel, there is apparently no room for two Hasidic-owned companies on the same route.

A dispute between the two bus companies that are vying for riders from New York to Washington, Vamoose and Washington Deluxe, has landed in court. As a result, some customers have been confused in recent days by Vamoose’s Web site, which first said the company was temporarily out of business, then said it was running again, but with fewer stops.

Vamoose and Washington Deluxe are owned by competing Hasidic entrepreneurs from Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Washington Deluxe, which predates Vamoose by two years, obtained a settlement from a rabbinical court in 2004 prohibiting Vamoose from operating on the same New York-to-Washington routes.
The religious court’s ruling was upheld in June by Justice Lawrence S. Knipel of State Supreme Court in Brooklyn. Andrew Citron, a lawyer for Washington Deluxe, said he served Vamoose with legal papers resulting from the justice’s ruling in mid-August, leading to the company’s recent temporary shutdown.

The service disruption led to “scores of e-mails from customers who were extremely distressed,” said Florence Bluzenstein, the wife of Vamoose’s owner, Sam Bluzenstein. She said that the legal dispute with Washington Deluxe remains unresolved, but that Vamoose has satisfied the court rulings by discontinuing service inside Washington.
But a representative from Washington Deluxe said, that they believe that Vamoose is still violating the court’s order by offering service anywhere in the Washington metropolitan area.

Spring Valley, NY - Assembly Candidates Fried, Jaffee Meet in Final Debate

Spring Valley, NY - Assembly candidates David Fried and Ellen Jaffee stayed mostly polite as they debated civil rights, property taxes and their voting records.
The debate, hosted by the Spring Valley branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, was the last for the two Democratic county legislators before Tuesday's 95th District primary.

The night's only tense moments came after the candidates were asked their reaction to accusations that Yitzy Ullman, administrator for the New Monsey Park Home for Adults, pressured residents to vote for four Democrats, including Fried.
Jaffee was booed by audience members, many of them wearing T-shirts in support of Fried, after she suggested Fried enlighten Ullman on fair voting practices, seeing as how Ullman carried Fried's petitions into the home.
"I think the suggestion there is a correlation is really inappropriate," Fried shot back, after saying that any interference with the electoral process should not be tolerated.

London - Kosher Food Returns To British Airways Flights After Hygiene Scare

London - Kosher meals were returned to British Airways flights from Heathrow and Gatwick after the airline temporarily pulled the provisions over “potential hygiene problems”.

Passengers flying were left without their usual Hermolis snacks after food sent by the company to India thawed out and was then refrozen.
The airline acted after was being alerted to worrying laboratory test results on the food. But further tests on Hermolis products have proved all clear and within minutes, the airline had placed fresh orders with the company.

Confirming that Hermolis meals had now returned to its flights from the two major airports, a BA spokesman said there is “no problem”. Earlier, she said that “due to potential hygiene problems with our supplier at Heathrow and Gatwick”, vegetarian meals and fruit platters were being offered as an alternative. “We apologise for the inconvenience to those passengers affected.” she said.

However, challenged on why alternative kosher food could not be provided, a spokesman said: “In common with any other business we wouldn’t start using a new supplier at a moment’s notice because we have to make sure they comply with our health and safety.” Any complaints from passengers would be looked at on an “individual basis”.

Annecy, France - Three Anti-Semitic Attackers Condemned

Annecy, France - Three young men were condemned to nine months imprisonment by a criminal court in Annecy, eastern France, for an anti-Semitic attack against a young Jewish boy in August.

Hakim Bouaoune, 21, Yassin Gsimi, 25, and Nabil Achenani, 20, all from Bellegarde, a small city in southeastern France, had been denied entrance to a nightclub in the nearby city of Annecy, on the grounds that they were drunk.
When the three heard a teenager call someone "Abraham", they started beating the 16-year-old boy and yelling anti-Semitic insults. The nightclub’s bouncers intervened with dogs and held the assailants until the police arrived. Abraham was taken to hospital and was unable to work for six days.
The prosecutor had requested a one-year prison term, claiming that the “racist insults were clear” and that the boy’s first name, Abraham, led to an outburst of violence.
The defence lawyer, Philippe Metral, denied any anti-Semitic intent, saying the three didn’t intend to go on “a commando-like Jew-beating rampage”. “They were not in a normal state because they drunk a cocktail of whiskey and beer,” he said.

Annecy’s Jewish community leader Robert Moos welcomed the sentence and congratulated local authorities for acting quickly. “The police arrested the thugs immediately and made it possible to bring them to justice,” Moos said, describing the assault’s impact on the community. Moos also stressed that Abraham was not really Jewish. "The youth’s father was Jewish but Abraham doesn’t have any particular attachment to the community."

Brooklyn, NY - $36 Million Lawsuit Against Brooklyn Developer

Brooklyn, NY - Condo owners in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood are suing developer Joshua Guttman, whose massive Greenpoint warehouse complex burned in May, over what they call shoddy construction.

The owners of 58 units at 50 Bridge St. want $36 million in damages from Guttman for "hundreds of structural construction defects" and code violations, according to their attorney Adam Leitman Bailey. "In wintertime, you can actually feel cold air coming out" of the electric sockets, said Danny Dulai, 29, an engineer.
Owners paid up to $1 million for apartments with 15-foot ceilings and to-die-for views of the Manhattan skyline starting in 2004. But the condo residents say the building is unstable and plagued by leaks, and has poor ventilation, paper-thin walls and low water pressure.

Britain - Police Accused of Inaction as Anti-Jewish Alliance Emerges

Britain - Britain's 300,000 Jews 'are more vulnerable to abuse now than for a generation'.
A sinister alliance has developed between far-Right groups and Islamist extremists who are united in their hatred of Jews, and are contributing to increasing anti-Semitism in Britain.

A report that just came out, criticises police forces for failing adequately to monitor anti-Jewish incidents. It calls on the Crown Prosecution Service to investigate why fewer than one in ten reported incidents leads to a prosecution.
It says that Britain’s 300,000 Jews are “more anxious and more vulnerable to abuse and attack than at any other time for a generation or longer”. It expresses particular concern about a new, “symbiotic” relationship between the traditional perpetrators of anti-Semitism who are united in their hatred of all things Jewish.

It found that Arabic translations of Mein Kampf and The Protocols of the Elders of Zion were stocked in Arabic bookshops in London.

Montreal, Canada - Man Removed From Airplane for Praying

Montreal, Canada - Some fellow passengers are questioning why an Orthodox Jewish man was removed from an Air Canada Jazz flight from Montreal to New York City for praying.

The airplane was heading towards the runway at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport when eyewitnesses said the Orthodox man began to pray.  "He was clearly a Hasidic Jew," said Yves Faguy, a passenger seated nearby. "He had some sort of cover over his head. He was reading from a book. "He wasn't exactly praying out loud but he was lurching back and forth," Faguy added.

The action didn't seem to bother anyone, Faguy said, but a flight attendant approached the man and told him his praying was making other passengers nervous. "The attendant actually recognized out loud that he wasn't a Muslim and that she was sorry for the situation but they had to ask him to leave," Faguy said.

The man, who spoke neither English nor French, was escorted off the airplane.

Air Canada Jazz termed the situation "delicate," but says it received more than one complaint about the man's behaviour.
The crew had to act in the interest of the majority of passengers, said Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stewart. "The passenger did not speak English or French, so we really had no choice but to return to the gate to secure a translator," she said.

New York, NY - Donald Trump Hires Lee Bienstock

New York, NY - Many in the Jewish community were disappointed three months ago when Donald Trump turned to Orthodox Jewish finalist Lee Bienstock and uttered the dreaded phrase, “You’re fired.”

But Last week Trump hired the 23-year-old as associate vice president of corporate development for his recently formed company, Trump Mortgage. Trump expects Bienstock to produce the same ideas that helped him advance to be in the top two to get a position in his company, Bienstock said. “The pressure is on. It’s the real thing.”

Even as Trump fired Bienstock three months ago, Trump planned to hire him. Right after that, Trump pulled Bienstock aside and indicated that he'd like him to work in the Trump organization. A formal interview followed shortly thereafter, and after considering many other job offers he received in the weeks following, Bienstock accepted Trump’s offer.

Concerning Trump, Bienstock said, “If he doesn’t like you, you’re finished; you might as well move out of New York – take a space shuttle if you can. But if he does like you, you’re golden.”

Elad, Israel - Mayors Car Torched

Elad, Israel - Some people lit the car of Elad Council Head Tzvi Cohen ablaze. There were documents and personal belongings of the mayor in the car. The police estimate that the background of the incident is the confrontation between the council and a religious faction in the city after Cohen decided to demolish a trailer used illegally as a synagogue.

At 3 a.m. police received a report that a car in the town was going up in flames. It was quickly understood that the car belonged to the mayor - it was parked in front of his driver's house. Police and firefighting forces were dispatched to the scene. Cohen himself arrived to assess what kind of damage had been caused to his car.
After an initial investigation made at the scene of the crime, it was clear to the police that the fire wasn't caused by an electrical short circuit or malfunction, but by arson, in the context of the conflict over the illegal caravan, after municipal inspectors disassembled a trailer to prevent it from becoming a permanent synagogue.

Mayor Cohen said that the burning of his car crossed a red line. "There is no doubt that we will get to whoever carried out this act and to whoever sent him. We in the municipality are doing holy work. Some parts of our work are nice things, but there are also parts of our work that are less nice, and interest groups aren't prepared to accept them," he said. And despite the pressure and the threats, he does not intend to take back his decision to dismantle the trailer. "Setting fire to my car only strengthens us to continue our work and doesn't scare or deter us. There is a phenomenon of illegally stationing mobile structures, and we are enforcing, and will continue to enforce, the Planning and Building Law in a massive way. I trust that the police will get to whoever carried out this act," he said.

Rosh Ha'ayin police have opened an investigation to find those responsible for the arson.

Woodridge, NY - More and More Kosher Stores to Stay Open During Winter

Woodridge, NY - The regulars in Woodridge have in recent years noticed that some of the temporary congregants from over the summer months come back periodically even in the dead of winter.

They are some of the thousands of Jews, mostly from New York, who now own second homes in the celebrated Catskill Mountains. But also is the Catskills becoming the year-round home for many young Orthodox couples who can not afford housing elsewhere.
The combination of the more frequent visits by the second home owners and the increase in the number of year-round dwellers has prompted the kosher supermarket's there to stay open all year. “It’s an experiment for us,” said a young man manning the cashier in one of the kosher supermarket's on the day before Labor Day, “many people have pleaded with us to offer kosher all year and we’ll give it a shot.”
For the larger stores like Wal-Mart and ShopRite, the departure of the nearly 300,000 Jews who vacation in the Catskills meant that it was time to wind down, although the stores keep some kosher products year-round.

According to kosher purveyors, this was a record year for their Catskills sales, with one volunteering a guess of $20 million for the two months. He recalled that several years ago, Wal-Mart estimated their sales of kosher foods over the summer at $2.5 million. “They must have done almost double that this year,” he suggested. The evidence is that sales for many of the purveyors increased by nearly 20%.
Several new year-round communities are being planned, which may very well make it more than an experiment for the kosher supermarket's.

Eugene, Ore. - White Supremacist Sentenced for Attack on Synagogue

Eugene, Ore. - A man federal prosecutors described as a white supremacist has been sentenced to 15 months in federal prison for an attack on a Eugene synagogue.

Gerald Poundstone, 28, pleaded guilty to civil rights charges and intentionally damaging religious property. The sentence handed down took into account the fact the incident was a hate crime and that Poundstone twice obstructed justice, once by threatening a witness, according to court records.
Poundstone said nothing during the brief hearing before U.S. District Judge Michael Hogan. Poundstone and other avowed white supremacists were accused of throwing rocks engraved with swastikas at a synagogue during a religious service on Oct. 25, 2002.

The stones shattered stained glass windows, but injured none of the 80 people inside.
In a statement to the judge, Assistant U.S. Attorney Bud Fitzgerald indicated that the government had made a deal with Poundstone. Fitzgerald and Poundstone's defense lawyer, Kelly Beckley, said the documents detailing the plea agreement are being kept secret out of concern for Poundstone's safety.
As part of the deal, Poundstone must serve three years of post-prison supervision during which he is forbidden from possessing publications or materials related to white supremacism, and from having contact with white supremacists. He also must pay $896 for the windows damaged for Beth Israel Synagogue.

Brooklyn, NY - Will One More Domino Fall in Williamsburg?

Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY - The Domino Sugar Factory buildings are as much of a landmark in the Williamsburg neighborhood as the Williamsburg Bridge.

When it was purchased in 2004 for just $55,831.875, the sugar refinery was still in operation, and it remained so for about a year, leasing the space from its new owner.
Today the developer, Community Preservation Corporation Resources, Inc. (CPCR), is seeking a zoning change for the unused space, similar to that which was approved farther north on the waterfront. .

The developer’s intent is to construct an enormous mixed-use complex and incorporate the least amount of historic preservation for which it can lobby successfully. This could allow as much as 1.8 million more square feet to be constructed in the low-rise, mixed-use residential neighborhood.

Montgomery County, MD - Montgomery County police are investigating after a red swastika was discovered on one of Councilmember Steve Silverman's campaign signs. Silverman is a Democratic candidate for Montgomery County executive.

A call came into the campaign office reporting the desecration of the sign on Spencerville Road, just east of New Hampshire Avenue.

"I am very disheartened over this anti-semitic hate crime," said Silverman. "Montgomery County is a wonderful, diverse county made up of all religions and cultures. There is no place in our county for this kind of hateful act of vandalism, particularly one that shows a symbol that denotes a very horrible and tragic period in our history."

Israel - El Al's Getting Its Wings Clipped in Europe Over Arms

Israel - Five European countries are refusing landing rights to aircraft from the Israeli carrier El Al that are transporting military equipment.
An airline official said that new restrictions imposed by Britain, Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal meant some incoming El Al flights carrying arms would not be able to refuel enroute, and would have to reduce their cargo load.

London drew criticism at home over stop-overs in a British airport by flights carrying military equipment to Israel from its U.S. ally.
Some El Al planes and pilots were mobilised by the air force during the last war to fly in military supplies.

Vienna, Austria - Holocaust Denier Loses Appeal on Conviction

Vienna, Austria - The highest court in Austria rejected and denied appeal during a closed session, by right-wing British historian David Irving and upheld his conviction for denying the Holocaust.

In February, a state court convicted Irving of denying the Holocaust and sentenced him to three years in prison.
A decision on an appeal of Irving's sentence is still pending. The court convicted Irving under a 1992 law applying to "whoever denies, grossly plays down, approves or tries to excuse . . . National Socialist crimes against humanity" by using the media.

Canada - Firebomber's Mother Gets Day in Court

Canada - The mother of the man convicted of setting fire to the Azrieli Library of United Talmud Torah elementary school two years ago begins her trial today.
Rouba El-Merhebi Fahd, 38, was charged with being an accessory to the fact in her son Sleiman's firebombing of the school back in April 2004, for which the 18-year-old received a 40-month sentence in a federal penitentiary.

El-Merhebi Fahd is accused of having tried to buy plane tickets to Brazil a few days before her son's arrest in an attempt to have him escape justice.
The younger El-Merhebi set fire to the school building on Passover Eve 2004 using cans of kerosene bought from the store he worked at. He shattered the library windows at the Beutel campus building and tossed in Molotov cocktails in the middle of the night. He said he was acting to avenge the assissination of sheik Ahmed Yasine, regarded as the spiritual leader of Hamas. Before returning to a party later that night, which he hoped to be able to use as an alibi, El-Merhebi left a note on the school door theatening more violence.

Bethesda, Maryland - Doctor Claims to Have Breakthrough Discovery on Cancer

Bethesda, Maryland - An amazing breakthrough in cancer treatment. It's still in the clinical trial stages, but so far its results have been promising. Right now, the treatment has been used on patients with Melanoma, a deadly skin cancer, that will kill nearly 8-thousand Americans this year.

The clinical trials are being held at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. That's where a cancer fighting pioneer by the name of Dr. Steven Rosenberg created a new way to attack cancer, by using the immune system. Doctors took the immune cells of 17 patients, and injected in them the genes of a virus, that would seek out tumors, and destroy the cancer. In 15 patients, the treatment didn't work, but in 2 patients, so far, the cancer appears to have completely disappeared. Dr. Rosenberg should know in a couple of weeks if the FDA has approved another clinical trial with an even more powerful gene therapy.

He's also looking to expand his treatment to lung cancer, ovarian cancer and prostate cancer.

West Long Branch, NJ - Police and Partygoers Exchange Charges

West Long Branch, NJ - Police are investigating whether police officers acted appropriately when responding to a Monmouth Road house party.

Ron Edelstein - whose brother and sister-in-law Marc and Rena Edelstein, own the Monmouth Road house - said police used "extreme" force and brutality in responding to noise and parking complaints.
Edelstein said he believes police acted that way because the family and partyers were Jewish, and at least one police officer said, "Keep the Jews back," according to Ron.

But borough police Capt. Lawrence L. Mihlon said, its not so, and one of the police commanders at the scene, Sgt. Brian Kramer, is Jewish. "It's not a Jewish issue," Mihlon said. "We could not be more proud of our Jewish community. They step up to the plate."

Police from the borough, Long Branch, Ocean Township, Oceanport, Monmouth University, Eatontown, Shrewsbury and Interlaken responded to the party attended by "hundreds," Mihlon said.
Ron Edelstein estimated at least 300 people were at the party, held for the engagement of Marc and Rena Edelstein's daughter, when police responded. David M. Edelstein, 18, son of Marc and Rena Edelstein, was arrested and charged with two disorderly person's offenses - disorderly conduct and underage drinking of alcohol - along with two criminal offenses - aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, Mihlon said.

David Edelstein was treated at Monmouth Medical Center and released after complaining of breathing problems from the effects of police pepper spray, Mihlon said. A few dozen partyers, including two pregnant women and an epileptic boy, were pepper-sprayed, said Ron Edelstein, adding only David Edelstein, who has asthmatic bronchitis, sought medical treatment.
Borough police first responded to neighbors' complaints about noise and improper parking about 10:30 p.m., Mihlon said. Police responded again about 11:55 p.m. to more noise complaints, Mihlon said.
When David Edelstein became combative, they tried to arrest him, Mihlon said. David Edelstein resisted and fled, Mihlon said. Partyers intervened, becoming physical, leading borough police to request assistance from other police departments.

Brooklyn, NY - Chocolate Doughnut Tossed Near Mayor Bloomberg

Brooklyn, NY - Mayor Bloomberg's news conference about installing cameras at Wyckoff Gardens in Brooklyn was interrupted by heckling, some cursing and a flying, circular object that landed near Bloomberg.
It was a doughnut.
Chocolate glazed.
Harmless as it was, it did cause, state Banking Superintendent Diana Taylor, to run for cover.
"Just another reason why we need cameras," Bloomberg quipped.

The purpose of the news conference was to announce that the city Housing Authority property was going to get security cameras, thanks in large part to Yassky, the Brooklyn councilman who is running in a nasty four-way primary for the Democratic nomination to succeed retiring Rep. Major Owens.
But the unruly crowd, which included supporters of other candidates, did their best to ruin the visit.
Yassky is running against City Councilwoman Yvette Clarke, state Sen. Carl Andrews and Owens' son Chris Owens.

New York +School's Open - Drive Carefully+

New York - As the summer season ends, thousands of children will be boarding buses and walking to and from school, some of them for the first time," said NY State Police. “Everyone who drives has a responsibility to be especially careful during this busy time.

State law requires all vehicles to stop when meeting or overtaking school buses stopped, with red lights flashing, to pick up or discharge passengers. Failure to obey that law is dangerous and could risk a young person’s life. Violations could result in fines of up to $250.
Parents “pre-walk” their kids to and from school along a predetermined route before sending them out alone. Children should be taught to use only the established route, and to wear brightly colored or reflective clothing in bad weather for maximum visibility or safety.

New York +Biggest Manhunt in NY State History, for Cop Shooter and Killer+

New York - A NY state police spokesman said that the hunt for cop shooter and killer Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, is biggest in NY state History.
The New York City Police Department might also be sending a team of elite Emergency Service Unit officers to help with the search for the fugitive who is thought to have shot three state troopers, one of them fatally, since escaping from an upstate jail in April.

The fugitive, described as a 6-foot, 240-pound member of the Seneca tribe of American Indians, is believed to have stolen an arsenal of guns and as many as 15 cars since escaping from Erie County Jail by using a can opener painstakingly to cut a 2-foot hole in the roof of the kitchen.

The manhunt for Ralph "Bucky" Phillips, 44, was stepped up to include more police from neighboring cities and state agencies after a state trooper, Joseph Longobardo, 32, died Sunday from a gunshot wound to his leg that he sustained last Thursday while looking for the fugitive.
Another trooper who was shot in the side, Donald Baker Jr., 38, was upgraded from critical to serious condition during the weekend, but went back to critical yesterday. On June 10, another trooper, Sean Brown, was shot in the stomach as he approached a suspicious car.

As many as 1000 law enforcement officers including FBI ATF DEA, are now involved in the search, and it might increase if he is not caught within the next few days.
The FBI will add Bucky on its 10 most wanted list replacing Polygamist Jeff's, if Bucky is not caught within 10 days.

Montreal, Canada - Jewish Community to Beef Up Security

Montreal, Canada - The city’s Jewish community is mobilizing, to ramp up security measures in a “very substantial” way following the firebombing of a Hasidic boys’ school over the weekend.

The Quebec region president of the Canadian Jewish Congress, however, refused to provide details about the measures to be taken. “If you discuss what security measures you’ve taken, then you negate what you’ve put into place,” Jeffrey Boro said.
As for the fresh money required, “I won’t quantify it except to say that it will be very substantial.”

The Hasidic boys’ school that was bombed over the weekend was one of the institutions singled out to be at risk in the aftermath of a 2004 firebombing.
It received a large subsidy from a community group to install several surveillance cameras. The cameras paid off in part last weekend when they captured images of a man in his 20s throwing a Molotov cocktail through a window, only 20 minutes after at least 12 young Hasidim had left the building.

Omsk, Russia - Opshern in Siberia: For the First time in 80 Years

Omsk, Russia - A historic event occurred in the city of Omsk as the ceremony of a toddler’s first hair-cut took place for the first time after 80 years. The ceremony was held for a three-year-old Zoshi Krichevsky, the son of the city’s Chief Rabbi Osher Krichevsky.

More than 100 community members shared the joy of the boy’s family, including the guests: Rabbi Krichevsky’s brother-in-law and father-in-law who arrived from Israel for this special occasion and the Chief Rabbi of Novosibirsk Zalman Zaklos. For this event, a local restaurant has been koshered for the first time ever in order to please the guests with strictly kosher and delicious food.

Rabbi Krichevsky spoke about the tradition of Opshernish and the opportunity of observing such old Jewish customs in a remote place such as Siberia. He thanked the guests and the community members and then invited them to snip a curl from the boy’s head. The participants performed this ancient Jewish tradition with great excitement. Then the boy licked off honey from a sheet of Jewish letters and the participants joined in cheerful dances.

Montreal, Canada - Man Sought in Firebombing of Jewish School

Montreal, Canada - Students returned to class at the orthodox Jewish boys school where two days before a firebomb attack took place, in the early hours of Shabbas morning and left the facility damaged. Police are seeking a masked man captured on a surveillance tape as he lobbed a Molotov cocktail at the school and community centre.

Taldos Yakov Yosef D'Skver Boys school, a school and community centre in the Outremont borough, was firebombed early Shabbas morning, some 20 minutes after 12 school students left the facility as was reported on VOS IZ NEIAS.

The attack caused damages initially estimated in the range of $20,000 to $60,000, and sent ripples of outrage through the Jewish community.
Meanwhile an anonymous donor, described as a French-Canadian businessman, is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

"Our only concern is the safety of the children," said Fred Gestetner school's president, who has considered bringing in counsellors for the children and is looking at increasing security.
"We are shocked with it, but it's something we have to handle in this day and age, I guess."

Monticello, NY - Property Owners Be On The Look Out

Monticello, NY - Some in the area say, they are tired of leaning fences, untamed weeds and broken-down buildings around town. So they dreated a group called "The Watchful Eyes," of business owners in the Village of Monticello and the Town of Thompson, a so called neighborhood watch, who are prodding local governments to toughen building codes, strictly enforce violations and revamp outdated laws.
And they're set to patrol the area, identifying eyesores and trouble spots over the next few weeks. "I certainly am not proud of this community, and I dare anybody to get up and say that they are," said Dr. Marc Hudes, the podiatrist who organized the group, at a meeting in his office. "We've had years and years of noncompliance, lack of code enforcement."

The group has split into two committees, one each for the village and town. In the next few weeks, they'll study the building codes and then begin driving around the area. They'll fill out "eyesore reports" that the village and town have created for citizens.
"Supposedly they will take action on them," they said.

Canada - Hate Writer Sent to Jail

Canada - In a precedent-setting case, a Two Hills engineer was sent to jail for 16 months for showing what the judge called an "appalling" level of hatred toward Jews on his website.
Crown prosecutor Steven Bilodeau said the case will be a "benchmark" for future cases because it's the first hate-crime conviction in Canada involving Internet postings. "We needed a sentence like this to send a strong message that there's no room in this country for hate like this," Bilodeau said.

Justice Philip Clarke told court he couldn't entertain a conditional sentence in the case because of the total absence of remorse shown by Reni Sentana-Ries, 63. "He does not believe his actions to be illegal, but rather a sharing of truth and hope for society," said Clarke.
Reinhard Mueller, was found guilty by a jury of wilfully promoting hatred for anti-Semitic writings he posted on his website.
On the site, he blamed Jews for everything and that they are lying about the Holocaust. He referred to Jewish people in terms like debauched, subhuman and demons.

Liberty, NY - Road Puts Locals in a Danger

Liberty, NY - The "stop ahead" sign and the sign admonishing trucks to use low gear for the descent along Ferndale-Loomis Road don't seem to be enough to get drivers to slow down as they approach the intersection with Ferndale Road.

The most recent crash happened just a few weeks ago, when a bus full of boys from a summer camp careened through the T intersection with Ferndale Road and into the Middle Mongaup River.
The Town of Liberty and many of the people who live there want to do something about Ferndale-Loomis Road. Supervisor Frank DeMayo said at the board meeting that he'll look into hiring a traffic consultant to help find a fix. An expert's opinion could also help get grants to pay for solutions, he said.
"That's a serious issue coming down that hill, and we've been lucky," DeMayo said.

This isn't about summer people, they said. Locals who use the winding, unlined Ferndale-Loomis Road as a shortcut from western Sullivan to Route 17 are a problem year-round. A garbage truck, a dump truck, a convertible - all have ended up in the Middle Mongaup. "The local people abuse that hill," they said.

Toronto - Canada to Arm Border Guards Along U.S. Border

Toronto - Canada announced it will outfit border guards with guns for the first time, moving to keep officers at their posts in the facing of increasing threats by armed fugitives.

Canada's guards along its 4,000-mile border with the United States do not carry guns, but many have demanded firearms.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the government plans to arm and train its 4,500 border agents over the next 10 years to use firearms. He said that starting in September 2007 some will be armed like their U.S. counterparts.
"There have been numerous examples of officers leaving their posts because they simply weren't equipped to deal with the kind of threat that was anticipated to come over the border," Harper said.

Officers abandoned four posts in British Columbia earlier this year when told two murder suspects from California were headed their way. The men were apprehended by armed U.S. law enforcement officers.

Brooklyn, NY - Jewish Leaders Rally in Support of Congressman Towns

Brooklyn, NY - Jewish leaders gathered in the Midwood section of Brooklyn, on Ocean and Avenue "M" to support the re-election campaign of Brooklyn Congressman Ed Towns.

Mr. Towns is a twelve term incumbent in the House of Representatives who represents the Tenth Congressional District of New York, which includes large parts of the Jewish communities in Midwood, Williamsburg and Canarsie. Towns is being challenged by City Councilman Charles Barron and Assemblyman Roger Green.

Mr. Barron a former black panther and controversial figure, gained notoriety by saying at a 2002 reparations rally  "I want to go up to the closest white person and say, ‘You can’t understand this, it’s a black thing’ and then slap him, just for my mental health."
At the rally Mr. Towns was flanked by Assemblymembers Dov Hikind and Helene Weinstein and City Councilpersons Michael Nelson and Lew Fidler.

Brooklyn, NY - Bogus 'No Parking' Sign

Brooklyn, NY - Several Brooklyn residents woke up to find their street empty -- because someone had posted a No Parking sign and police had towed their vehicles.

The sign, which bans parking on a street in the DUMBO neighborhood from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays, mysteriously appeared Monday or Tuesday, and then police started ticketing and towing cars parked there.

But the Department of Transportation says there aren't any parking restrictions in the area and it doesn't know who posted the placard, which looks official.
Resident David Bourgeois said he had to pay $205 to retrieve his Mini Cooper, with a $60 ticket on the windshield, from a police pound after it was hauled away. "It's just outrageous," he said.

The DOT said it would "try" to dismiss the ticket -- and take down the No Parking sign.

U/D: 09/03/06
But now the Department of Transportation threw it into reverse.
The agency now says it did indeed install the sign a week ago, meaning the parking restrictions are in effect - and people like Bourgeois are out of luck.
His $60 ticket will not be dismissed. And the $205 in tow charges, per car, will not be refunded, DOT spokeswoman Kay Sarlin said.

"This is amazing," Bourgeois, 38, a freelance writer, said. "They don't know what they are doing. I wonder if they are going to come up with another story."

Bnei Brak, Israel - Police Pursuit in the Streets of Bnei Brak of Stolen Police Car

Bnei Brak, Israel - A police pursuit of suspected car thieves through the streets of an Israeli city ended with officers reporting another stolen vehicle -- their own.

After crashing into an electricity pole during the chase in the Tel Aviv suburb of Bnei Brak, the three suspects abandoned their car and made a run for it on foot.
Two officers bolted from their police cruiser to try to catch them, and one of the suspected thieves was arrested, another got away, but the third man doubled back, and jumped into one police car and took off now

Jerusalem, Israel - Ultra-Orthodox Jews Attack the Unzealous

Jerusalem, Israel - There is fear in the neighborhoods of Mea She’arim and Geula. Neighborhood residents walk rapidly to their destination, seeking a safe haven from a group of violent extremists that is terrorizing the haredim, from important rabbis to ordinary people, they consider too lax.

Ordinary people and even prominent rabbis have been physically assaulted in the neighborhoods where the ultra-Orthodox live.
Yisrael Klatzkin, a printer who was ambushed and beaten on his way to a Torah class, nicknamed the group Sicarii, identifying them with the Zealots, extremists who opposed Roman rule.
The Sicarii, who may number as few, do not accept the Jewish state and refuse to carry Israeli identity cards, pay taxes, receive any government services or vote.

Rabbis have been assaulted or had stones thrown at them for ruling that Orthodox Jews could join the Israeli Defense Force or other decisions objectionable to the group.
One rabbi had to use a bodyguard so he could attend a family wedding safely.

Monsey, NY - Election Probe Into Adult Home Widens

Monsey, NY - Questions continue to mount as state and county officials investigate claims that the administrator of an adult home threatened its residents to get them to vote for four Democrats.

The state Department of Health visited the New Monsey Park Home for Adults, in part because of complaints regarding voter coercion, department spokesman Jeffrey Hammond said. "We are investigating the conditions and services at the New Monsey Park home, including the potential misuse of residents' funds," he said.

Board of Elections officials said that election inspectors who were sent Aug. 25 to collect absentee ballots at the home were told by some of the residents that home administrator Yitzy Ullman had given them a list of candidates and told them to vote for those candidates or their television privileges would be suspended.
The inspectors were told money was also involved in the threats, officials said. "Our priority remains protecting the well-being, safety and rights of the residents," Hammond said.

Ullman has said that the facility distributed the list of candidates' names as a recommendation, and he denied any coercion.
"They're coming up and saying, 'Who should we vote for?' " he said last week. He added that the candidates on the list had proved to be advocates for health rights and the mentally ill, among other interests of the home's residents.

Republican Board of Elections Commissioner Joan Silvestri said the matter, is under investigation by the county District Attorney's Office.
Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner Ann Marie Kelly said that in addition to the inspectors' reports, she is also suspicious of the volume of Democratic registrations that came in from the home on the last day to register for the primary.

Dominican Republic - Jewish travelers, mostly New Yorkers, looking for a kosher-style holiday in the Dominican Republic in January 2004, got a holiday in hell, according to court papers just filed. Hotel security even pulled a gun on one of the rabbis, according to the tour company owner.
The Jewish tour group, Club Kosher, claims that a Dominican hotel agreed to accommodate 800 travelers, mostly families, and their dietary needs for a winter vacation, but its accommodations were completely unorthodox.

They filed suit in Manhattan federal court against the hotel's Spanish owners, Occidental Hotel Management, for more than $2 million.
Club Kosher co-owner Charles Rosenay said that the hotel agreed to allow the tour company's eight mashgiach two days to "kosher the kitchen" and prepare for the holiday package. It also requires that all kosher food and dishes be kept separate from non-kosher food.
The tour group brought all their own plates and food, said Rosenay. They were supposed to have exclusive access to the resort, he said.

But soon after they arrived, outside guests checked in. "They paid their money. They wanted cheeseburgers and they wanted to drink booze," Rosenay said.
At one point, fed up with the staff's indifference to kosher rules, a mashgiach smashed a plate after he caught the staff using it for non-kosher food. Soon the entire security staff showed up with billy clubs in hand and one of them pulled a gun, Rosenay said.

The tour company gave "substantial" refunds to vacationers, but Occidental never came clean for their foul-ups, said Club Kosher owners.
