A March Against Hate Crimes in Crown Heights

Crown Heights - Leaders from the Jewish and black communities in Crown Heights marched with city officials and NYPD hate crimes officers last night to condemn hate crime.
The move comes after a Hasidic man was allegedly attacked on Monday by three black men in Crown Heights who used anti-semitic slurs. The Crown Heights Jewsih Council's says the reaction to this attack is much different than in 1991, when rioting broke out, she views Monday's attack as an isolated incident.

A Unusual Heavy Stuffed Suitcase Found In The Trunk Of His Yellow Cab.

Two partners who had been in NY for the jewelry expo at the Javits Center, Notice on their way to another show in Toronto that they are empty-handed, they left their suitcase loaded with hundreds of thousands of dollars in bridal jewelry in the trunk of a yellow cab.
But an honest cab driver when he realized what they left he went looking and found a business card in the back seat matching the name on the stuffed suitcase, he called the company and tracked down the two grateful partners who gave him a very nice reward.

Brooklyn Navy Yard, Historic Houses "Admiral's Row" Could Be Demolished For Commercial Use

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation wants to acquire ten brick houses along Flushing Avenue - Admiral’s Row land - from the federal government, and demolish the houses and replace them with industrial buildings, which they say will help create more manufacturing jobs.

But local residents are fighting it and say houses should be fully restored and preserved as a unique reminder of Brooklyn’s historic navy life.

However Brooklyn Navy Yard President Eric Deutsch believes the current state of the homes is beyond repair.

The issue goes before the Department of City Planning later this month.

Man Pays Speeding Ticket In Pennies

Moorhead, Minn. -- A man ticketed for speeding thought he'd get even by paying his fine with 12,000 pennies. But the judge had him wait for the change to be counted.

Rather than count the small garbage can full of pennies by hand, the Court Administrator took them to the bank, where they were put in a counting machine. She returned with $120 in cash and some extra pennies, which were given to the Seattle man, who waited in the courthouse.

He was cited for driving 70 mph in a 55 mph zone March 5.

Window Tint Lands man, In Court

Jack Rosenzveig was driving his 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited when he exited the Cross Island Parkway onto Northern Boulevard. He was pulled over by a motorcycle cop who explained to the him that the driver and front passenger windows were too dark. the officer used a gauge to measure the tint before presenting him with a ticket.

According to the New York Tint Law enacted in 1991, front- and back-side windows must allow more than 70 percent of light in, which DMV spokesman said "in reality is almost clear." There are no regulations for rear windows, excessively tinted windows could face a fine of up to $150.

Woodridge: Residents Frustrated Over Egg Factory Stink.

Woodridge - Residents are raising a stink about odors from a kosher egg factory in the village. Residents crowded into Woodridge Village Board meeting to complain about the smell and demand action.
The factory is causing a stench that has been forcing homeowners to frequently shut their windows and stay indoors this summer.
The company is storing eggshell remains temporarily in tanks at the factory on Novogradsky Road. and wastes attached to the eggshell cause a strong chicken manure-like odor.
Moses Neustadt, part owner of Newburgh Egg, said the factory is trying to fix the odor problem.
The company recently bought a machine that turns eggshells into fertilizer. A part needed to get the machine running was pledged a month ago, but it hasn't arrived, Neustadt said

Monticello - More than 90 people filled a courtroom in the Sullivan County Courthouse to oppose the county's plan for a supersized landfill a 35-acre expansion on lower Broadway.
The crowd came from Mountain Lodge Estates, a summer community near the landfill.   Young children made up more than two-thirds of the crowd.
The parties agreed to postpone a scheduled hearing while the county and DEC staff negotiate. The hearing will reconvene on Sept. 20.

Kiamesha Lake: First Public Presentation To Incorporate New Hasidic Village In Town Of Thompson.

Kiamesha Lake - A Hasidic leader and one of the principal movers and shakers behind the idea to form an incorporated village at the end of Gibber Road between Fallsburg and Monticello, got a cold reception at the town board meeting when he was spelling out plans. He told them that "we are not the kind of people who are hostile or aggressive, we are more of an asset than anything else." He said that his group wants to attract another 100 families, they have roughly 50 now and need more people to support the yeshiva.
But Town Board members disagreed and said they don't like it. "Do you find it reasonable to form a village to circumvent our zoning?" the Supervisor said.
A incorporation petition hearing was scheduled for Aug. 9, and the town board would be willing to sit down and talk, the supervisor said.

Ramapo - Three Teenagers Charged With Stealing From 11 Synagogues.

Three Ramapo teenagers have been charged with burglarizing two synagogues, stealing money from charity boxes, they are also suspected of breaking into 10 other synagogues in Ramapo and stealing cash from the collection boxes between March and Thursday, Ramapo police said today.

A grand jury would hear felony burglary charges against Joshua Zelcer, 17, his brother Aaron, 18, and Uriel Zelcer, 18, who apparently is not related to the brothers. All three live in New Hempstead.

The three were arrested Monday on two felony counts each of third-degree burglary.

Most of the synagogues were in Monsey, New Hempstead or near Spring Valley.

The three young men were released into their parents' custody on $1,000 bail each by Ramapo Justice.

Brooklyn - Two unknown black males assailants punched a man walking down the street in Brooklyn last night around 10:45 p.m. and made anti-Semitic, anti-Jewish remarks before fleeing the scene, police said.

The victim, a 50-year-old male, was walking on Schenectady Ave. between Crown and Carroll st.'s when he was approached, he was taken by hatzolah to King's County Hospital with laceration to his lip, and heavy bleeding.

RALEIGH, N.C. -- An Amtrak passenger train struck a dump truck loaded with gravel and derailed Tuesday, killing two people, from the dump truck.

The collision knocked the train's engine and two lead cars off the tracks.

In what police describe as an anti-Semitic attack, the tires of six vehicles, including two Hatzolah ambulances, were slashed in Crown Heights.

All of the vehicles were parked in front of the Lubavitcher headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway, a synagogue that has been embroiled in a dispute between two factions within the Orthodox chasidic movement. Police said they had no evidence that the tire-slashing had anything to do with the dispute between the factions within the religious group.

After hopping to the Catskills region in his own helicopter yesterday, Mayor .Michael Bloomberg tried to woo Jewish voters during a brisk campaign marathon in the mountains.

The Mayor greeted the breakfast crowd at Kutshers Country Club in Monticello, then he met with talmudic students in Woodridge, followed by a walk-and-talk at the Woodbourne shopping area and a stop at a girls' summer camp. He is counting on the votes of those 18 and older.

The Catskills area is a longtime popular attraction for Jews from the city, who send their children to camps or spend weeks there enjoying the lush green hills and fresh air.

Councilman Simcha Felder (D-Brooklyn) described the reception the mayor got as something akin to what "a great movie star or Derek Jeter" would receive if they visited Bensonhurst.

Bloomberg was warmly greeted, but some adults approached reporters to complain about parking tickets and sanitation fines for recycling violations.

Monticello, N.Y. Police say a delivery milkman from the Brooklyn-based A-H-V-A Food Co. on his nightly run in the Catskills was robbed and pistol whipped at an ice cream stand by four armed men, they emerged from nearby bushes and took 10 dollars, pistol whipped him, and fled.
The victim called 9-1-1, when officers arrived on scene, they saw three suspects jumping over a chain-link fence and pursued them. K-9 units found two of the suspects hiding in the rafters of the park's pavilion and took them into custody. Monticello police charged the two teenage males with first- and second- degree robbery, felonies. They will remain in jail without bail pending further court action.Two other suspects are still at large.

The Village of Kaser From An Outsiders Visit

The village of Kaser is a half-hour from Manhattan in Rockland County the village has 3,000 residents in a half-dozen long residential blocks and is the heart of the Hasidic Viznitz sect in America.
He was sent to check the place out because a group of former Kaser residents plans to form a Hasidic village between Monticello and Fallsburg in the Town of Thompson. It is assumed Sullivan's new village will be like Kaser.

      "This is a village,"said Kaser's clerk and treasurer. "We have a government. We have officials. It is no different than any other."
