Get Your SHABBOS GOY To Ask Judge Rosenwasser A Question Tomorrow

Orange County Court Judge Rosenwasser, who's running for state Supreme Court, will be a guest on a Chester radio program, at 9 a.m. tomorrow. He'll be appearing just a few days after Chasidim from feuding factions in Kiryas Yoel and Brooklyn duked it out at a Brooklyn synagogue. That brawl ("hats and bats," in police vernacular) came in the wake of a Rosenwasser order demanding proof that a member of the Kiryas Yoel faction had been expelled from the Brooklyn synagogue:
Kiryas Joel's residents are observant Jews. They don't travel, cook or turn on appliances during Shabbas, which begins at sundown Friday and ends at sunset on Saturday. That means listening to the radio show and interrogating Rosenwasser on the air will be problematic for the thousands of people in Kiryas Yoel who vote. Some surrogates might have to step up.
So, if you live in Kiryas Yoel and you've got a question for the judge, you've got until sundown today to get your Shabbos goy lined up with some probing inquiries worthy of Maimonides himself. If you're not from KY, once again, that time is 9 a.m. tomorrow.
Pass the popcorn, please.

New York - No Exit Polling After Mayoral Race For the First Time Since 1985

On Election Day next week, for the first time since 1985, there will be no exit polling in New York

Normally, news organizations gather together to survey voters as they leave the polls. That information helps determine the makeup of the electorate and helps analysts draw conclusions about the success or failure of campaigns.

"We're back to the dark ages before exit polls," a Baruch College professor of public affairs, Douglas Muzzio, said. "Before the exit poll, it was guesswork and looking at actual voting from precincts. We're back to square one. We're really in the dark ages, and we're in the dark."

DENVER - 4 Officers Join Air Force Evangelism Suit

DENVER - Four Air Force second lieutenants officers have joined a lawsuit filed by a Jewish graduate of the academy, claiming senior officers and cadets at the Air Force Academy illegally imposed Christianity on others at the school.

The lieutenants, all graduates with the class of 2004, joined the suit filed by former Air Force officer, Mikey Weinstein, said Sam Bregman, Weinstein's lawyer. He identified them as Casey Weinstein, one of Mikey Weinsten's sons, Jason Spindler, Patrick Kucera and Ariel Kayne.

"Any argument that Mr. Weinstein didn't have standing _ that argument is over," Bregman said.

Weinstein's federal suit said he had failed to win an assurance from the Air Force that Christian chaplains would stop proselytizing. The suit prompted a proposed new set of guidelines on religious conduct in the Air Force.

Fallsburg - Orthodox Jews Voting As Bloc, Has Fallsburg's Full-Time Residents Concerned

Fallsburg - What many folks in Sullivan County feared is now happening. Ultra-Orthodox Jews from Brooklyn, with second homes in Sullivan, are urging bloc voting for certain political candidates for county office and in Fallsburg, where most of the Orthodox live.
A group called The Alliance, which says it represents more than 1,000 voters is calling for a bloc vote, and that worries some residents in this county, where the growing presence of the Orthodox community turns up on everything from a kosher bakery's "Welcome to Fallsburg" sign to a billboard for a doctor with Hebrew words.
Members of the ultra-Orthodox community have already given thousands of dollars to candidates.
Many say they're concerned that a group of residents who are in Sullivan for just two months could decide an election.
The Alliance members say they have every right to vote in Sullivan. They're backing their chosen candidates "because they're more responsive to our needs," says Bernie Gips of Brooklyn. He has a home in one of the growing number of upscale second-home communities for the ultra-Orthodox in Fallsburg.

Orange County, 7th District Candidates Talk Of Growth

Candidate McLaughlinSaid: The unrelenting growth of the Village of Kiryas Yoel is the single greatest growth and development issue facing District 7 today. While not a part of District 7, the village's expansion and city-density development threatens the environmental sustainability of the communities around it, particularly in the areas of air quality, water resources and wastewater pollution. The village's plan to tap into the New York City Aqueduct with a miles-long pipeline would topple the precarious environmental resources balance we are attempting to maintain in our region. Neighboring communities must be able to rely upon the resources of the county Planning Department to maintain the integrity of their respective master plans and zoning laws. The county Health Department must take a hard look at any applications from the village for sewage or water infrastructure expansion. Orange County Sewer District No. 1 must ensure that what little remaining capacity we have left is fairly distributed among all its member communities. And, finally, the county must be ready and willing to go into court - as we have done on the pipeline - to exercise the control over rampant development that the Village of Kiryas Yoel is unwilling to do.

Williamsburg - Chassidic Holy War on Videotap

.

Synaguge 152 Shmini Etzeras 2 10/25/05
A chilling videotape showing a congregation of Chasidim being ambushed by a hostile faction during a prayer service at a Williamsburg synagogue has been turned over to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.
On the tape, members of feuding sects are seen slapping and punching each other and pulling their opponents' beards inside the synagogue last week.
The videotape, from a security camera, shows thugs allegedly brought in by the invading up state Aaron's faction choking a man who is struggling to free himself.
In another segment, they break into the grand rebbe's sanctuary.
Security cameras were installed after followers from Aaron threatened to break into the Brooklyn synagogue during the holiday of Shmini Atzeres, as they did last year.
No one was arrested in the rumble, but dozens of cops were called to quell the violence.

UN To Designate Today, January 27 As Annual Holocaust Day.

UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. General Assembly on Monday that designated January 27 as an annual commemoration day for the 6 million Jews and other victims murdered in the Nazi Holocaust during World War Two.
The measure, expected to be approved on Tuesday by consensus, rejects any denial that the Holocaust took place. It also urges members to "inculcate" future generations with the lessons on the genocide so it would not be repeated in the future.
The General Assembly has often been accused of anti-Semitism and persistent concentration on the plight of Palestinians. The Holocaust was largely ignored until January when the assembly held a session to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the death camps.
The resolution, first proposed by the United States, Israel, Russia, Australia, and Canada was co-sponsored by nearly 100 nations from every continent.

Sweet Smell Not Budget Crisis, Confounds New Yorkers

New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that tests had been conducted by the Department of Environmental Protection, the Health Department and other city agencies, but no toxic substance was found for the smell that seemed most prominent in Manhattan, what many called a sweet smell like maple syrup or pancakes.

It's believed to be some sort of food substance, but we can't substantiate that, said Kelly.

I smelled it as I was walking home from Tribeca to the upper West Side, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., said Michelle Collins. At first I didn't say anything, but when my roommate got home she said she heard people talking about it all over the city. By then it was like IHOP (International House of Pancakes) on a Sunday morning.

City Councilman Candidate Religious Commitment Restricted Him From Campaigning

David Ceder the Democratic opponent to City Councilman - an Orthodox Jew-religious commitment restricted him from campaigning for most of October, which comprises 20 days of religious observance between holidays and the weekly Shabbas.

For 10 of those days, he had to stop working before sundown to mark the official start of all Jewish holidays, thereby cutting himself off from frequent evening political functions.

Still, Ceder, a candidate in the heavily Orthodox mid-Island district that includes parts of Brooklyn, envisions a healthy marriage between an Orthodox lifestyle and a job in politics. His sentiment is evidence of the increasing comfort Orthodox Jews feel toward their roles in public life.

Orthodox politicians throughout New York have said their religious and public identities are melding with more ease than ever before, One symbol of the trend is the growing number of yarmulkes, perhaps the most visible symbol of the faith, worn in public.

Brooklyn Family Of 15 Survives Rollover Crash On Ramp

ALBANY, N.Y. -- State Police say unsafe speed and an inexperience driver caused an accident near exit 24 of the New York State Thruway.

A family of two adults and 13 children were heading home to Brooklyn from a weekend trip to Montreal when their van took a curve too fast and rolled over on the southbound ramp from the Northway to the Thruway.

The father, who was behind the wheel , was trapped in the van with serious injuries. Rescue crews had to cut the roof off the vehicle to free him, He is still at Albany Med at this time. There is no word on his condition.

The battalion chief of the Albany Fire Department, said that it was amazing that there weren't more serious injuries.

LONDON - Council Accused Of Discrimination Over Bus Costs

LEEDS, LONDON - Angry nine Orthodox Jewish families have taken Leeds City Council to the High Court in London over claims the authority discriminated against their children.
The case was brought by families who pay for their children to be bussed every day to a school in Manchester.
They argued, if the council would not provide a Jewish school in Leeds, then it should fund the travel costs of allowing the children to continue their Jewish education, claiming the council had acted unreasonably and unlawfully and failed to treat Jewish children the same as they would Christian children.

The case was brought after the council decided last September that it was "not appropriate" to provide funding for a school coach to take the nine children from Leeds to Manchester, where they attend either the independent Manchester Grammar or state-funded Jewish school King David High.

German Court Sides With Wertheimer Heirs Who Lost Their Retail Fortune Under Nazis

BERLIN - Germany's highest administrative court has upheld claims to real estate in Berlin by heirs of a Jewish family who lost their department store fortune under the Nazis.
The ruling is a victory for the Wertheim heirs, and delivers a setback to KarstadtQuelle, which had fought the family's claim to the site of its former downtown Berlin department store near the city's glitzy, redeveloped Potsdamer Platz square worth millions of dollars.
The State Administrative Court in Leipzig ruled that the Wertheimers retained their claim on the property because they had not been compensated for it under Allied restitution programs.
A KarstadtQuelle spokesman could not immediately be reached.
The department store site is worth some $20 million, attorneys for the heirs said.
They said the decision opened the way for claims on a total of 24 acres of former Wertheimer property in Berlin, which they estimated to be worth some $200 million.

Hispanics Uncovering Roots as Inquisition's 'Marranos' Jews

HOUSTON, TX - For more than two decades, anecdotal evidence collected by researchers in New Mexico, Colorado and Texas suggested that some nominally Catholic families of Iberian descent had stealthily maintained Jewish customs throughout the centuries, including lighting candles on Friday evening, avoiding pork.

Modern science may now be shedding new light on the history of the crypto-Jews after molecular anthropologists recently developed a DNA test of the male or Y chromosome that can indicate an ancestral connection to the Cohanim, a priestly class of Jews that traces its origin back more than 3,000 years to Aaron, the older brother of Moses.

Williamsburg -- Sergeant Norman Horowitz Of The 90th Precinct Is Hanging Up His Gumshoes

Unlike most city cops, Sgt. Norman Horowitz worked his way up from beat cop to head of the robbery unit and now commanding officer of the detective squad - all in the same precinct.
Now, after nearly 40 years chasing rapists, robbers, murderers and armed gunmen and cheating death many times over, Horowitz, 62, is retiring - reluctantly.
"After 40 years, they think I can't do the job," said Horowitz, only half joking.
Horowitz joined the NYPD in 1966. Under department rules, he must step down before his 63rd birthday, Nov. 18. His last day will be Halloween.
"Norman would do this job for free if he could because he loves it so much," said Precinct Commander Capt. John Corbisiero.
"He's been in and offered some of the premier jobs in this department, Horowitz turned down high-level posts to stay in Williamsburg. Norman is the best." said a Police Department official.
Horowitz's longevity has earned him a critical role in policing Williamsburg's established Chasidic, Hispanic and Italian communities - sometimes a delicate balancing act.
When Horowitz gets involved, "both sides leave happy," said Corbisiero.
During his time on the force, Horowitz was stabbed three times. He stood at the wrong end of a barrel on several occasions - and owes his life to the fact that the gun malfunctioned.
"I'm living on borrowed time," he said.
