Brooklyn - +Homicide Of A School safety agent+ A school safety agent suffered a fatal heart attack Friday night after she was assaulted and struck by a 12-year-old girl flailing her arms and hitting the officer in the head in school at 1224 Park Place in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. The The agent began to hyperventilate and complained of chest pains. She died moments later in the ambulance on the way to Kings County Hospital Center, at 450 Clarkson.

Sole Survivor Settles Lawsuit In Grand Canyon Helicopter Crash Of 2001

LAS VEGAS - The sole survivor of a Grand Canyon sightseeing air crash that killed six people in 2001 has settled a lawsuit involving the tour company, pilot and helicopter manufacturer.

A lawyer for Ch. Daskal, 29, of Brooklyn, N.Y., said that a confidential financial agreement had been reached in the civil lawsuit stemming from the crash.

Daskal has been slowly rehabilitating from near-fatal injuries she received in the crash Aug. 10, 2001. The mother of two suffered a broken back, burns over 80 percent of her body, and had both legs amputated after the helicopter crashed into a cliff during a sightseeing tour to the Grand Canyon.

The National Transportation Safety Board blamed pilot error in a report last year.

Lakewood - Rabbi Pleads Guilty In Altercation With Police Officer

Lakewood - Rabbi Yosef Bursztyn, 63, whose altercation with police officer Erik Menck this year sparked protests in Lakewood's Orthodox Jewish community, has pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in connection with the incident.
The rabbi pleaded guilty to the disorderly persons offense before a Superior Court Judge, who imposed $125 in fines.
Bursztyn admitted he failed to comply with a directive of the Officer on June 26 while Menck was performing an official function, court documents said.
Police said Bursztyn reached inside Menck's patrol car after the officer had stopped the rabbi's niece for allegedly tailgaiting another vehicle.
Bursztyn's arrest sparked protests in Lakewood's Orthodox community. Menck was cleared of any wrongdoing in the incident.

Parksville - The former Paramount Hotel, in Sullivan County, was sold for $3.7 million in a federal bankruptcy auction.
The bidder was Jacob Selechnik, he must close on the property by Dec. 22 or forfeit a $370,000 deposit.

The 84.5 acre property includes a 183-room hotel, private lake, indoor and outdoor pools and a club.

The sale also includes 130 acres of farmland and a 10-acre bungalow colony.

"There's a big need for a street going through the village," he said. "There's much more cars. This will make it easier."
He said a cost and a time frame had not yet been established, and the village would need to do a drainage study before work began.

Lakewood - Rally Spotlighting Woman's Claims She Was Beaten By Police, Was Canceled For Now

Lakewood - A protest rally to spotlight a woman's claims she was beaten by a township police officer drew only a handful of people Tuesday to Town Square.
Nichole Robinson, the woman who says she was beaten last month by embattled Patrolman Erik Menck, said the rally was canceled because Public Safety Director Al Peters told her that organizers needed a permit.
The rally will be rescheduled for next month, Robinson said, four police officers, including Menck, went to Robinson's Coventry Square town house to question her about a disorderly persons call earlier that day.
Robinson maintains Menck asked her for a statement and then beat her in front of her two children. Wearing a bandage on her left arm, Robinson said Tuesday she suffered injuries to her arm, her hand and her back.
Police say Robinson attacked Menck while he attempted to get a statement from her. Robinson was then taken to Kimball Medical Center for treatment of asthma, police add.

New York City Health Officials Claim That Metzizah Be'Peh Is To Blaim For More Infants Infected With Herpes

New York - City health officials said that they had identified two new cases in which infants were infected with herpes this year during a circumcision ritual practiced by some Orthodox Jews called Metzizah Be'Pah.

Health officials have identified at least five infants believed to have been infected during such procedures by Type 1 herpes, commonly carried by adults. One baby died and another may have suffered brain damage, health officials said.
Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the commissioner of health and mental hygiene called upon parents to consider other religiously viable options, including using a tube or sponge. But he did not ban the practice.

NYC - A judge issued a preliminary injunction Tuesday barring strikes and other labor disruptions by members of the transit union and its leadership.

NYC - Number of Shooting Victims Spiking Citywide

The number of shootings and shooting victims is spiking citywide, Police Department statistics indicate.

The number of shooting incidents increased 4.4% to 1,454 as of Sunday. Last year at the same point in the year, there were 1,392. The number of shooting victims increased to 1,744 from 1,679, a 3.8% boost.

Despite the increase in shootings, the number of reported murders dropped to 508 from 542, a 6.2% decrease, for the first 11 1/2 months of the year. Gun arrests rose to 3,126 from 2,853, a 9.5% gain.

D.C. Police Say NYPD Officer Shot Teen, Then Left

Washington, DC - An off-duty New York City police inspector shot and wounded a 16-year-old youth who apparently was trying to rob him in Northwest Washington. The official then left the scene and reported the shooting to his department only after returning to New York.

D.C. police said they were investigating the incident. The officer, identified as Robert Wheeler, is an inspector with 24 years of service who works for the department's transit division, authorities said.

Brooklyn - Sentences In Synagogue Fight Of 2004

Brooklyn - Four men received sentences of community service yesterday in connection with a fight in an Orthodox Synagogue in 2004.
The fight stemmed from a power struggle between two brothers, Aaron and Zalmen Teitelbaum, seeking to succeed their father, Grand Rabbi Moses Teitelbaum, as leader of the Satmar Chasidic sect. Without admitting guilt, the four entered guilty pleas, based on the strength of the evidence, to charges of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

Williamsburg artist came home to find a sticky note put up outside the door of his apartment. Can anyone tell him what this means? Or even what language it is in?

Similar notes were stuck next to other apartment doors in his building as well. One outside each apt door on the second, third, and fourth flood, and one next to the ladder to the roof, and some were on the first floor.

NY State Police Testing New Gadget That Scanes Plates

New York State Police are testing a gadget called a license plate scanner that checks almost every plate near it, telling the trooper if the plate is suspended, expired or reported stolen.
So instead of a trooper "running" your plate by calling it in, the scanner is like a thousand eyes, a thousand call-ins, a thousand checked plates - all with two cameras and a computer.
NY State police have been using the Mobile Plate Hunter 900, as the system is called, for about a month with mostly good results, 13 of them are being tested around the state.
Headquarters in Albany are pleased with the scanners, which cost between $18,000 and $19,000 each, That comes out to about $234,000 to $247,000 total.

Monsey - A Club's Demise Could Spur Downtown Revitalization

Monsey - The closing of a club whose owners battled Ramapo officials and the heavily Orthodox Jewish residents for years, is seen as an opportunity to revitalize the Route 59-Route 306 area.

Since the club closed, the town has been moving forward with plans to revitalize the busy stretch with mixed-use development, Town Supervisor said.

The plan to revitalize includes, A three-story mixed-use development with retail stores, office space and apartments. A $900,000 pedestrian walkway starting at Monsey Glen County Park, going underneath Route 59, crossing Route 306 and ending at Robert Pitt Drive. An 82-unit housing development on a 5-acre site. Staten Island - Jewish Organizations Are Collecting Potatoes For Holiday Potato Latkes Food Drive

The Jewish Organizations of Staten Island is conducting a Potato Latkes Drive to feed hungry families in the borough.
The goal is to collect 2,000 pounds of potatoes, in five-pound bags, by Dec. 16. The potatoes and food baskets will be distributed before Hanukkah, which begins Dec. 25, so that every home can have traditional potato latkes for the holidays.
Potatoes can be dropped off at Staten Island synagogues and all Hebrew School students are being asked to bring potatoes with them to class.

East Hampton - Judge Reverses Himself In Synagogue Case

East Hampton - A judge who prohibited the congregation of a prestigious East Hampton synagogue from voting on whether to oust its board of trustees and renew the rabbi's contract as reported on VOS IZ NEIAS, has reversed himself and ruled that the vote could be held on Dec. 25. The judge, Justice Ralph F. Costello of State Supreme Court, is expected to decide next month whether the vote is valid under state law and the constitution of the synagogue, the Jewish Center of the Hamptons.
Allegations that Rabbi David J. Gelfand, left, plagiarized sermons and misused synagogue funds have sharply divided the 1,100-member congregation, which has supported the rabbi, and its trustees, who have said they would not renew his contract. The rabbi has denied wrongdoing.

Large explosions have rocked the Buncefield fuel depot near Hemel Hempstead in Hertfordshire northwest of London, near Luton Airport shooting flames hundreds of feet into the sky, the explosion was heard as far away as the Netherlands.

Police say there are 39 casualties, and two people seriously hurt.
The fire, which police believe was caused by an accident, involves 15 to 20 plants and 20 oil tanks could last days with more explosions expected.
