City Questions Metzitzah B'Peh

A circumcision ritual practiced by Orthodox Jews called Metzitzah B'Peh, has alarmed city health officials, who say it may have led to cases of herpes - one of them fatal - in infants. And after months of meetings with Orthodox leaders, city officials have been unable to persuade them to abandon the practice.
The city's intervention has angered many Orthodox leaders, and the issue has left the city struggling to balance its mandate to protect public health with the constitutional guarantee of religious freedom.

And most traditionalist groups, including many Chasidic sects in New York, consider oral suction integral to God's covenant with the Jews requiring circumcision, and they have no intention of stopping.

Kiryas Yoel, MonDroe, Despite Concerns From Neighbors, Well Gets DEC Go-Ahead

Kiryas Yoel, MonDroe -- New well gets go-ahead, from DEC regional permit administrator.

The new well will increase KY's supply by a third, to pump up to 486,000 gallons a day on average - more than the combined amount that the village draws from six nearby wells.

The DEC is dismissing concerns that it might take water from homes on Old Country Road in MonDroe and from the Ramapo River.

Once connected, the new well will increase the village's total daily supply to more than 1.9 million gallons – well above the peaks of up to 1.4 million gallons that the village sometimes uses.

It seems that he had the misfortune of buying a used Kia Sedona last year - from a dealer that bought it at an auction in Connecticut in September 2004 - that vehicle had been reported stolen by its previous owner, who must not have realized that the bank had repossessed his vehicle.

For seven weeks the case was in the hands of the Orange County district attorney's office, which had to investigate the matter before it could ask the court to dismiss the charge.
Today, he's finally scheduled to appear in Town Court to be formally cleared of the charges.
