Washington Heights, NY - Suspect In Elevator Slay Of Jewish Man Was Caught

Washington Heights, NY - Cops were questioning a hulking ex-con last night as the suspect in the killing of a beloved Washington Heights grandfather in a brutal elevator mugging, police said.

Six-foot-6 William Hill, 24, was brought into the 34th Precinct station house at 7 p.m. after cops began looking for him in the murder of Jacob Gerstle, 81. Gerstle, a father of four and a well-known member of the local synagogue, died three days after the May 2 attack, when he was followed into his building on Bennett Avenue and pummeled to death.

Police identified Hill as the suspect in the attack on Gerstle and at least four similar elevator muggings of seniors in Washington Heights. Cops believe Hill attacked the other victims in May and June of last year, but the attack on Gerstle, in which his wallet containing $250 and his cellphone were taken, was the only deadly robbery, police said. Birmingham, Ala - Democratic Candidate For AG Denies Holocaust Occurred

Birmingham, Ala - A Democratic candidate for Alabama attorney general denies the Holocaust occurred and said he will speak this weekend in New Jersey to a "pro-white" organization that is widely viewed as being racist.

Larry Darby concedes his views are radical, but he said they should help him win wide support among Alabama voters as he tries to "reawaken white racial awareness" with his campaign against Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson.

Democratic Party leaders are wondering what to do about the candidate. The state Democratic chairman, Joe Turnham, said the party began an investigation after hearing about some of Darby's comments.
While the party supports the free-speech rights of any candidate, Turnham said some of Darby's views appear to be in "a realm of thought that is unacceptable." "Any type of hatred toward groups of people, especially for political gain, is completely unacceptable in the Alabama Democratic Party," said Turnham.

It is unclear whether the party could do anything at this point, although the party could decline to certify the results should he win.

Freehold, NJ - Judge Appoints Fiscal Agent To Sort Out Dwek's Properties

SOLOMON DWEK ARRESTED AT HIS HOME 05/11/06

Freehold, NJ - A Superior Court judge ended a hearing on Solomon Dwek's real estate empire by appointing a fiscal agent to help sort out the more than 200 properties controlled by embattled investor.

Judge Alexander D. Lehrer appointed Donald M. Lomurro of the Lomurro, Davison, Eastman and Munzo law firm, to begin reviewing Dwek's assets and report back to the court. Lomurro will act as a fact finder for the judge, who will try to untangle the complex business and real estate transactions. "The chaos, speculation and uncertainty will end here, now," Lehrer told the courtroom, which was packed with more than 100 lawyers, bankers, partners and observers.

Lomurro will begin his job immediately and work through the weekend, Lehrer said. His primary task will be to classify the different parties with interests in the real estate, such as mortgage holders and business partners. "This is a complex commercial piece of litigation that will be resolved by business people in a business manner," Lehrer said.

Dwek did not attend the hearing. Dwek is free on $10 million bond. Dwek's attorney, Robert A. Weir Jr., Red Bank, said his client wanted to work out the claims Thursday, but the arrest interfered with that. "Instead of walking in with funds today to settle it, we're a little behind," Weir said. "We are not running away. We are going to address it."

Ocean Township, NJ - Real Estate Mogul Solomon Dwek Arrested

SOLOMON DWEK ARRESTED AT HIS HOME 05/11/06

Ocean Township, NJ - Real estate millionaire developer Solomon Dwek vice president of the Deal Yeshiva and son of Rabbi Isaac Dwek, a leader in the Sephardic Jewish community and the head of the Synagogue of Deal, a prominent Monmouth County rabbi, was arrested at his Ocean Township home and was charged with trying to defraud a bank of more than $50 million.

Solomon Dwek, 33, of Ocean Township, was accused of depositing a bogus $25 million check at the PNC Bank in Eatontown last month and spending $22 million of it before he was caught. He then tried to deposit a second bogus $25 million check at a different PNC branch, but employees stopped him, he was arrested without incident by a law enforcement task force that included members of the FBI, the Monmouth and Ocean County prosecutor's offices, and the Brick police department.

Dwek had his initial appearance in U.S. District Court, District of New Jersey, Newark in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark Falk. He was charged with bank fraud, a crime that carries a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

Dwek appeared in court with his feet shackled and his hands cuffed behind his back. Federal marshals made him remove his belt after his arrest. As he stood before Falk, he tugged clumsily at his pants to keep them from falling down. His father and other family members were in court with him.

The U.S. Attorney's Office argued Dwek is a significant flight risk because of the amount of money involved and asked for high bail. Falk set bail at $10 million. The amount is secured by $3 million of equity in the Deal homes of Dwek's mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Dwek and his wife, Pearl, were ordered to surrender their passports.

Brooklyn Fire Sale

Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY - The charred ruins of the city's biggest fire in more than a decade are being used to line the already deep pockets of the ravaged site's owner - who is literally selling the rubble off brick by brick.

Dozens of century-old, giant wooden beams and thousands of bricks from the destroyed Greenpoint Terminal Market are being carted away and sold.
The red bricks from the warehouse's crushed walls are priced at 15 cents for lots of 10, and the magnificent roof beams - cut from durable wood that can be recycled into new flooring - are being hawked for about $1,500 each.
Even the beams that were scorched black are selling fast, wood is just like toast. Scrape off the burnt part and it's like new.

The bricks and beams began being carted away in huge trucks when the elder Guttman, 58, the site's owner, made a rare appearance at the site, escorted by his son.
"You and the media make me guilty," Joshua Guttman yelled at a photographer before driving away in an SUV.

Several Greenpoint residents whose homes were temporarily shrouded by the blaze's black smoke were outraged. "It's disgusting, but that's business as usual for a person like Guttman," said Phil DePaolo, 45, of the community group the People's Firehouse. "Their interest is always money. That's the bottom line of a developer."

When a Jew Sues How do rabbinical courts work?

Last month's passing of Satmar Grand Rabbi Moshe Teitelbaum has provoked a widely publicized dispute over which of his sons will control the Orthodox Jewish sect he led for 26 years.

Beyond the matter of who will control these assets, this dispute (which reportedly began more than seven years ago) raises a number of general questions regarding the appropriate legal system for the resolution of disputes within the Jewish community. For instance: What is the province of a rabbinical court (also known as a beit din)? Are Jewish disputants permitted to settle their differences in a secular court? Which law is applicable--Jewish law or secular law? Who decides?

The overarching Jewish law principle in all such matters is "gadol hashalom" or, roughly translated, "peace is great." A worthwhile objective, though as the Rabbi's and many others can attest, it's often a long time in coming.

Freehold, NJ - PNC Bank Disputes Joseph Dwek's Claim On Properties

Freehold, NJ - PNC Bank, which has accused Solomon Dwek of defrauding it of $20 million, said a recent claim by Dwek's uncle that he -- not the younger Dwek -- is the true owner of $60 million in properties is "fraught with questions.''

A Superior Court judge last week froze all of Dwek's assets, which led to Joseph Dwek, 54, of Brooklyn, Solomon Dwek's uncle, to file a claim in court asking that the freeze be lifted on some of the properties, he said he had asked his nephew to buy the properties on his behalf but didn't realize until last month that all the properties were actually in the name of Solomon Dwek and his companies.

PNC Bank said Joseph Dwek's claim to unfreeze the assets should be denied because there was no written agreement for the deal for three years until April 24, the same day Solomon Dwek bounced a $25 million check at the bank. Moreover, the $20 million Solomon Dwek, 33 of Ocean Township, is accused of taking was transfered to HSBC Bank, where Joseph Dwek has his lines of credit, according to the court papers.

One corporation that Joseph Dwek owns, Yeshuah LLC, was not formed until last week, even though the elder Dwek claims the he owns all the properties through that company, the bank said.

The matter is scheduled to be heard by Superior Court Judge Alexander D. Lehrer Friday.

Brooklyn, NY - The Kestenbaum family and Joshua Guttman are just two of the land barons who have given more than $50,000 to Yassky, according to filings. "Subliminally or subconsciously, these folks probably get more access [to Yassky] when the phone rings," said Neal Rosenstein, a government reform coordinator for the New York Public Interest Research Group.

After Guttman's Greenpoint Terminal Market went up in flames in a suspicious fire last week, Yassky returned a $500 contribution. Guttman has denied involvement in the fire, the city's largest since 9/11.

A Williamsburg preservationists pointed to the Austin, Nichols & Co. warehouse at 184 Kent Ave., which the City Council voted not to give landmark status to in November. As representative of the district, Yassky was the force behind the nonlandmark vote.
The building is owned by brothers Louis and Moshe Kestenbaum - who in 1991 pleaded guilty to a scheme to sell cosmetics and groceries intended for the former Soviet Union. Instead, the Kestenbaums and three others were convicted of illegally selling them in the U.S. for a $4 million profit.

In the last two years, Yassky has gotten a total $2,100 from Louis Kestenbaum's son, Joel, and $3,000 from two Kestenbaum business associates.

Yassky officials said he was unaware of the Kestenbaums' crimes. "Experiences shows us that when a candidate is receiving hundreds if not thousands of contributions, it's next to impossible to know what each contributor has done years and years ago that might raise a question," said Yassky election lawyer Jerry Goldfeder. "We look at all the contribution checks, and we scrutinize them as best we can."

Tenant Cesar MacDonald, 44, said "The situation is very bad," who said he has had to boil pots of water to bathe his four young daughters since the hot water conked out last week.

Sofer did not return repeated calls for comment. Superintendent Joe Schwartz, reached on his cell phone, said he visits the building regularly and defended conditions there. "I fix everything in the building," said Schwartz. "This landlord is a very good landlord."

Borough Park, Brooklyn - The Unusual Taste Of Fear

Borough Park, Brooklyn, NY - For years, Orthodox Jews have come here to keep the temptations and immodesty of the modern world at bay.

Many families do not own televisions or attend movies, the children attend yeshivas instead of public schools, adolescent girls do not leave the house without making certain that their knees and elbows are covered, and at weddings and funerals alike, women and men sit separately to avoid physical contact, as required by religious law.
But in the last month, the world outside has intruded sharply on this carefully tended enclave. Three times in April, young girls there have been approached by a man flashing a police badge or business card who tried to lure them into his vehicle. One of the girls, a 10-year-old, climbed into the man's car and was molested by him.

That attack and the other encounters have left many girls frightened and have increased the level of vigilance among the police and community leaders to a high pitch. "I think because we're such a sheltered community, we feel invaded," said Helen Muller, a principal at the United Talmudic Academy in Borough Park. "We've tried to shelter them from outside influences," she added. "But this whole situation brings the street into the community."

And with no suspects yet in custody, Borough Park has battened the hatches even tighter.
"I think things have changed dramatically," said Simcha Felder, a city councilman who represents the area. "There are cops all over the place. Shopkeepers are fixing their security cameras and making sure they have tape. Parents are spending a lot more time talking to their children. It's scary to most people, and everyone is on edge."

Along 16th Avenue, mothers pushing strollers, spoke of keeping their children indoors at playtime, and increased patrols by the Shomrim, the community's volunteer security force.

Hatzolah Collides With Off-Duty NYPD Officer

Monroe, NY - A Hatzollah member rushing to Arden Hill Medical Center, ran a red light and collided with a Honda driven by an off-duty New York City cop yesterday afternoon as reported at that time on VOS IZ NEIAS.

The city cop, 42-year-old Mayra Liciaga, was turning left to get on Route 17 east at Exit 130. The Hatzolah member, driving an unmarked minivan but with flashing red lights on the dash and grill and EMT plates, went around traffic and through the red light at the intersection with Route 208, striking Liciaga's Accord on the passenger side and spinning it around, minor injuries were reported.
The Hatzolah member, Shloima Schvimmer, 36, was transporting the grandmother of a 4-year-old child to Arden Hill. The child, who was taken to the hospital for an allergic reaction, was in a separate ambulance.

State police have issued no tickets, but are determining whether Schvimmer should have been driving in an emergency manner.

Lakewood, NJ - Suspect In Abduction Not The Same Guy Terrorizing Women In Borough Park

Lakewood, NJ - Jacob Cohen, the owner of a pizza store in the shopping center where a 20-year-old female was abducted Sunday night, said he saw a green Jeep Cherokee in the parking lot behind the Trim Gym at 8:15 that night. He said the man appeared nervous. “He was definitely waiting for something," Cohen said. "I didn't think anything of it," until 11:30 when he heard someone was missing, that's when he called police with the description of the SUV.

But Cohen said the guy he saw Sunday didn't look exactly like the sketch police have released of a suspect with no hair and a goatee. “His hair was much longer,” Cohen said.

Police are now confident the Lakewood suspect is not the guy terrorizing women in the Jewish Orthodox community in Borough Park Brooklyn, NY. They said the suspects do not look alike. “The cases in New York, the victims were younger,” Capt. Robert Lawsen said.

Police said they've received several tips from the community and have two substantial leads that they believe could lead to an arrest.

Cleveland, OH - Man In U.S. Facing Deportation For Nazi Past Loses Lawsuit

Cleveland, OH - A jury awarded damages to a retired travel agent who claimed he helped a man facing deportation for his past at a Nazi death camp.

John Demjanjuk, who has appealed his deportation order, made a rare public appearance last week in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court in a lawsuit filed in 2003 by Jerome Brentar.

The eight-person jury on Monday awarded Brentar $90,000-$18,000 from each of five defendants: Demjanjuk, 86; his wife, Vera, 80; son John Demjanjuk Jr.; former son-in-law Edward Nishnic and the Demjanjuk defense fund. Brentar had sought $2 million.

Defense lawyer Kenneth Boukis said Demjanjuk's defense fund hasn't existed for about 10 years and that much of the jury award likely is uncollectable. Boukis said the defendants hadn't decided whether to appeal.

Demjanjuk, who came to the U.S. in 1952 and worked for Ford Motor Co., lost his U.S. citizenship for a second time when a judge ruled in 2002 that documents from World War II prove he was a Nazi guard at various death or forced labor camps. Demjanjuk, who had been suspected of being a notoriously brutal guard known as Ivan the Terrible, faced a death sentence for crimes against humanity before the Israeli Supreme Court ordered him released in 1993 and allowed him to return to his home in the Cleveland suburb of Seven Hills, Ohio. When the Justice Department renewed its case, it no longer identified him as Ivan the Terrible, but as a Nazi guard.

Brentar, 83, argued he provided money and logistical support, such as arranging for Demjanjuk's defense team to travel to and from Europe and Israel. Brentar, who worked with the International Refugee Organization in Germany during World War II, testified that Demjanjuk assured him in private meetings dating back to the early 1980s that he would eventually be repaid for his help.

Israel - Rabbis Get Female-Free Flight

Israel - Two leading rabbis concluded an agreement with El Al, and bought all first class tickets, and asked the airliner to only post male stewards on the flight so they do not have to see women on their way to America, also to have it movie-free.

The two rabbis are the Gerrer Rebbe and Rabbi Aharon Leib Steinman, 93, who will fly to visit American Jewish communities.

The rabbis asked that the flight from Israel adhere to the strictest standards of modesty. Their aides agreed with El Al officials that they will not have to see women during flight.
They bought all first class tickets on the flight to make sure no businesswomen are on board.

It was also decided that no films will be screened during the flight. Moreover, the backs of first class seats will be covered with plastic so that the rabbis won't even have to see the television screens.
Responding to the report, El Al said: "We do not report on our costumers out of respect for their privacy."

Rockland County, NY - Smoking Survey Starts, High Tobacco Use Among Yiddish-Speaking Men

Rockland County, NY - In the next month, 1,000 Rockland residents will get telephone calls asking them questions to help determine how the county focuses its anti-smoking programs.

The Rockland Health Department is doing its annual survey of tobacco use and attitudes toward smoking. "It helps us see what the trends are," said Shelley Chanler, a public health educator. "It also evaluates the impact of the programs we have in the community."
The department has contracted with a company to call 1,000 Rockland homes. "The data are used in a combination of ways," said a New City public health researcher who will analyze the data for the Health Department. "It helps us evaluate what the results are of the efforts we've already made and tells us what we can do to improve."

Previous surveys also showed higher-than-average tobacco use among Yiddish-speaking men in Rockland.
That information led the Health Department to meet with Jewish community leaders to talk about smoking, they said. "We learned that many men start smoking when they go to Israel to study."
The department is working with Jewish community leaders to try to develop smoking-cessation programs for those residents.
This year's survey also will help the county gauge opinions about tobacco use.

Kiryas Joel, Monroe, NY - Workers are clearing trees and excavating a hillside next to Route 105 to prepare for the reconfiguration of a treacherous bend and intersection at Bakertown Road in Kiryas Joel.

Orange County and the village are collaborating to turn the Y-intersection into a T-intersection with a stop sign and better sightlines for drivers. Kiryas Joel is paying for a small piece of privately owned land at the curve and for the excavation and removal of the dirt, which will cost about $136,000, will likely cost about $500,000.

Once the excavation is done, the county will shift Route 105 to the cleared space and extend Bakertown Road by about 100 feet to meet the new roadway.
The village plans to build a commuter park-and-ride lot on the vacated section of Route 105 after the road work is completed.

Israel - Braslav Man Suspected Of Murder

Israel - A wandering glance and a curse word – these are apparently the reasons that led to the murder of Samuel Daslone, 31, on Saturday in Mazkeret Batya. The suspect, a 36-year-old Braslav man with a criminal record, was apparently enraged after Daslone glanced at him and called him later a "stinking religious man" - and proceeded to stab him to death.

Later that night Daslone was rushed in critical condition to Kaplan Hospital in Pesach Tikva, where he died of his wounds despite doctors' efforts.

Police have already arrested two men suspected in being involved in the case - Aviad Koresh and Gideon Bana - both of whom were brought to court to extend their remand. Later police managed to get their hands on the murder suspect who said he was involved in the incident and even directed the investigators to the crime scene.

During the investigation police officers were shocked to discover that the fatal incident began with a wandering glance by the victim toward the murder suspect.

Chicago - New Synagogue's Torah Has Long History

Chicago - Bewigged Orthodox Jewish women, and black-hatted Orthodox men paraded down Touhy Avenue, and their shared jubilation was over something old and traditional. They danced to klezmer music, sang and shouted mazel tov as they surrounded a century-old Sefer Torah from Belarus that has been in one family for seven generations.

Hundreds took to the street to carry the holy scroll from Rabbi Zev Cohen's house to a new, expanded synagogue at 3050 W. Touhy: Congregation Adas Yeshurun Anshe Kanesses Israel.

One of the world's most prominent Orthodox rabbis, Mattisyahu Salomon, traveled from New Jersey's so-called Harvard of higher Jewish scholarship -- Beth Medrash Govoha -- to help move the Torah to a 131-year-old Holy Ark inside the synagogue. The Holy Ark, dates to an 1875 Maxwell Street congregation.

The Sefer Torah, was carried under a wedding canopy, or chuppah.

The Torah once belonged to Cohen's great-great-grandfather. His great-grandfather, Joseph Mael, carried it with him on the boat that ferried him to the United States. "This is a double day," Rabbi Cohen said. "It's a double day because we are celebrating the new synagogue, and we have a synagogue that's going nonstop in Chicago for some 135 years."

New York - Eliot Spitzer, Snub or oversight?

Rabbi Aaron and Rabbi Zalman

New York - Eliot Spitzer might not have realized what he was stepping into when he paid a condolence visit April 30 in Brooklyn to Zalmen Teitelbaum, son of Moses, the late grand rebbe of the Satmar Hasidim. The problem was that he failed to call also on Aron Teitelbaum, Zalmen’s older brother and rival for the Satmar throne.

The next day, New York City tabloids speculated about whether the attorney general and would-be governor had snubbed Aron.
After all, politicians such as Gov. George Pataki and Sen. Hillary Clinton had all taken pains to see both brothers and avoid alienating one faction within the bitterly divided Satmar community.
Spitzer representatives said it was a harmless oversight: They thought Aron was at home in Kiryas Joel, rather than in Williamsburg, when Spitzer met with Zalmen.
They were said to be trying to set up a separate meeting with Aron.

But some Aron supporters concluded that Spitzer’s chief of staff, Richard Baum, who supported Kiryas Joel’s anti-Aron dissidents a decade ago as Democratic minority leader of the Orange County Legislature, had steered his boss to Zalmen alone. Spitzer’s office did not return a call for comment.

Number One - Michael Bloomberg (Mayor)

Number Two - Patricia Harris (First deputy mayor)

Number Three - Eliot Spitzer (NY Attorney general)

Number Four - Isac Weinberger (Political gossip)

No one does more to shape the rumor of the day—and, hence, drive the city’s political conversation—than does Weinberger, a gruff, rotund Hasidic Jew who works for the city. Weinberger spends his days on the phone shaking down people for tips—who’s thinking of dropping out of what race, what a candidate’s internal polls are showing—and promptly passing them on to the next caller (without the benefit, it should be said, of any fact-checking, only increasing his power).

Nadjar was given three: for driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and failing to use lane-change signals, officials said.

Proper identification and proof of residency will be required in order to receive the card, and residents will have the option of having their cards processed during the upcoming YAC registrations.

Monsey, NY - Man Wants Sign Reinstalled

Monsey, NY - For a few months now, Romanowski said, he's been trying to get the town of Ramapo to reinstall a no-left-turn sign on Maple Avenue. "When the sidewalks were put in," he said, "that sign came down and was never put back up."
The sign is to keep westbound traffic on Maple Avenue from making a left turn into the parking lot of Congregation Vyoal Moshe D'Satmer.

Instead, traffic destined for the synagogue is to turn left onto Monsey Boulevard and into another entrance to the lot.

The intent is to prevent traffic backups on the busier Maple Avenue, said Paul Gdanski, an engineer with the town's Public Works Department.

Romanowski, who lives nearby on Maple Avenue, said he went back and forth between the town Building Department, the Public Works Department and Highway Department in his attempt to get the sign returned to its rightful place, but with no success.

New York, NY - Countdown Walking Traffic Lights

Walking Traffic Lights

New York, NY - City Councilman John Liu, head of the Council's Transportation Committee, thinks the city should install countdown walking signs at traffic lights, the ones that tell you how much time there is until the light changes to red. But the counter argument would be that people underestimate the time it takes to walk across the street.

The city will be testing countdown timers at some intersections. And early this year, Transpiration Alternatives had suggestions for the Department of Transportation to reduce pedestrian fatalities.

Crown Heights, Brooklyn - Four Murders In 4 Weeks All Of Them On President Street

Crown Heights, Brooklyn, NY - During a deadly four-week stretch, four men were slain on a 10-block stretch on President St. in Crown Heights - spreading fear in a neighborhood already plagued by a substantial rise in homicides.

The stretch falls within the NYPD's 71st Precinct, where the number of murders more than doubled last year compared with 2004.
"We don't see any connections among the cases," said Police Department Deputy Inspector Frank Vega, commanding officer of the 71st Precinct, as he tried to allay residents' fears.

In the wake of the last year's spike in murders, a dozen cops were added to the precinct in January. But police said they still need help from the residents of President St.
"We need more eyes on the street," Vega said, noting that "no active neighborhood watch group" operates on the block where the most recent killings happened.

Eight people have been killed in the 71st Precinct this year, up from five during the same period in 2005, and it's the killings that have people talking.
