Orange County - Judge Rosenwasser's Order Caused Riots In A Synagogue, Now He Is Asking For An Explanation

Kiryas Yoel - Orange County Acting State Supreme Court Justice Stewart Rosenwasser had to read the riot act to rival factions of Satmar Chasidim after an order he issued on Friday touched off and caused a synagogue brawl and uproar.
The judge fired off a fax yesterday expressing dismay at the recent "chaos and lawlessness" and demanding lawyers to explain it when they return to his court on Nov. 30.
"Be advised," he wrote, "that this Court will take any action appropriate in dealing with any party who intentionally misrepresented this Court's ruling."
Rosenwasser caused an uproar Friday by demanding proof that Aaron ally Berl Friedman had been expelled from the Williamsburg congregation by the Grand Rabbi.
On Tuesday morning, shortly before worship to celebrate the holiday of Simchas Torah, Friedman marched into the Williamsburg synagogue with a crowd of Aaron supporters and security guards.   What came next was a brawl, broken up by police in riot gear.
Police returned to the synagogue that night and arrested 26 young men for forcing them selfs in again and burglarizing offices of the synagogue.

Synagogue Faction Allegedly Wrecks School

The clash between warring factions of the Satmar Chasidim in Williamsburg just got more heated, with 26 people arrested for wreaking havoc inside a school adjacent to a synagogue.
"It looked like a hurricane came through there," a police source said. "Everything was just busted up and thrown around."
The school was stormed by the suspects Tuesday night, by peolpe who walked into the Yetev Lev D'Satmar synagogue on Rodney Street, then broke down a wall to access the school affiliated with the synagogue and started breaking and throwing anything they could get their hands on, the source said.
The suspects were charged with burglary, criminal mischief and petty larceny.
The incident was clearly a by-product of the wild confrontation earlier Tuesday in which more than a hundred cops were called to the synagogue to quell a disturbance involving more than 1,000 worshipers, police said.
Some at the synagogue Wednesday tried to downplay the burglary incident, saying the 26 men were simply there watching TV and smoking cigarettes.
Police sources, however, said it appears those arrested are affiliated with Aaron Teitelbaum, the leader of a Satmar congregation in upstate Kiryas Yoel.
Scott Mollen, lawyer for Zalman's supporters, said there is no doubt the suspects were from Orange County.
"They tried to give impression to people they were only in the reading room ... " Mollen said. "Only someone who believes in Alice in Wonderland and is willing to suspend common sense and reality would believe New York City policemen would arrest people for reading.

Police Separate Two Factions Of Satmar Chasidim When Battle For Control Erupts In A Synagogue

A confrontation erupted yesterday at a Williamsburg synagogue that has been at the center of a long and bitter feud for control of the Satmar Hasidic sect.
At least one person was injured in a face off between hundreds of members of two factions at Congregation Yetev Lev D'Satmar. Some Chasidim complained they were roughed up by cops while praying, something police denied.
Police had to separate several people inside and outside the synagogue at 152 Rodney St. Police estimated the crowd was from 500 to more than 1,000 people.
Police eventually restored order, and many of the upstate faction retreated to a nearby tent where they have been praying.
Although no one was arrested, one person was treated at Long Island University Hospital for a slap to the face, police said. They added that seven security people aligned with the upstate Kiryas Yoel faction were issued summonses for not having watchmen's licenses.
Tensions escalated after a group from Orange County, who had arrived Monday night, dorced them selfs in to the synagogue yesterday morning, the start of the Simchat Torah holiday.
"They destroyed the synagogue," said the man, who identified himself only as Moshe. "Whatever they could damage, they did."

AIRMONT - To Scrutinize Proposed Airmont Yeshiva

AIRMONT - The village's Planning Board has begun the process of determining how a yeshiva with housing for students and faculty will affect a single-family neighborhood.

The plans of Congregation Michknois Lavier Yakov to create a religious community on Hillside Avenue near the New Jersey border will be weighed against residents' concerns that development threatens water supplies and increases dangers of sewage overflows.

At a meeting last week, the board listened to planning consultants, engineers, attorneys and about 20 residents.

After receiving an environmental impact statement containing the concerns of the board and residents, the congregation will address the issues.
